1965 Mercury Comet

About this Current Vehicle:

The "Cheapie" Model "202" - Assembled in Lorain, Ohio - Shipped to a Mercury dealership in Memphis, Tennessee - Ended up in Bastrop, Louisiana being a "Grocery Gitter" for 40 years - FINAL place of residence is Bel Air, Maryland where beginning in 2005 it has been "reborn"!

Factory Options:

Radio - Heater - 200 CI inline 6 cyl - 3spd on steering column - Bench seat

Exterior Modifications:

All metal emblems and badges removed and replaced with 'Airbrush' applications.
Silver accent stripes on the hood, roof, and trunk.
Side window frames that were originally painted on my "202" model have the Comet model "404" 'bright trim' installed. The 'bright trim' that came from the factory on the model "202" roof drip rails was removed.

Interior Modifications:

Custom vinyl & tweed two-tone materials covering front bucket seats (with headrests removed) from 2000 Ford Escort, also covering original back seat as well as door panels and rear seating area quarter panels.

DELETED: AM radio (replaced with molded in 'delete plate') - ashtray & cigarette lighter - heater controls & unit - emergency brake & mechanism - interior light & door-jamb on/off switch buttons.

ADDED: Remote controlled AM/FM under dash stereo/CD with hidden antenna & hidden speakers - "Vintage Air" under dash AC - "Sun" tacometer & matching under dash mini gauges - mini console - auxillary plug-in receptacle (hidden) for 'GPS', computer, cell phone charger, or other accessories.

Performance:

1997 Ford Explorer cured 302 cubic inch (4.9L) engine, with Ford Cobra heads, converted from 'EFI' to carburetion - sitting on 1969 Mustang motor mounts (raises engine 3/4 inch from original) - "Blue Thunder" high rise aluminum intake manifold with 3 "Holley" 256 CFM 'Deuces' with progressive linkage sitting on "Cobra" heads, getting fed by a "Mr. Gasket" electric fuel pump through an adjustable fuel regulator - exhausting through 2 & 1/2 inch "Hedman" headers and "FlowMaster" 'Delta Flow' 40's with pipes over the axles - breathing through custom made polished cast aluminum air cleaners - ignited by a 5.0L 1985 Mustang "Dura-Spark" ignition/distributor & amplifier box, (1985, last year Dura-Spark was used with carburetion) - cooled by "Tru-Cool" aluminum radiator with chrome overflow bottle - 'serpentine' belt & pully set-up - "Sanden" mini AC compressor mounted on custom made cast aluminum mount - dual reservoir master cylinder with proportioning valve (to accomodate front disc brakes) - battery relocated to the trunk, an "Optima" 'red-top', mounted in a custom made cast aluminum bracket. Quarter mile track statistics accomplished on 'street' tires.

Suspension/Chassis:

FRONT SUSPENSION: - Ball bearing pivoting spring perches - custom made strut rods with 'swaged tubing' adjustment - 1inch anti-sway bar - 1978 Ford Granada spindles with 11 inch disc brakes - P-195/70R14 tires on 6 inch "American Racing Torque Thrust D" wheels, mounted on 1/2 inch diameter lug nut studs.
NOTE: I did a 'Shelby Drop' using "Control Freak" tubular upper and lower control arms, and really liked the 'LOOK'. However, there was such a bind in the geometry of that set-up when under hard acceleration that the front end locked up at maximum heighth and got ugly! $1000.00 later, they have been removed and new original style a-arms reinstalled making it act right. Just say "NO" to 'Blue Moon Motor Sports" junk!

REAR SUSPENSION: "Lakewood" traction bars - "Crites" custom made weld-in subframe connectors - P235/60R15 tires on 8 & 1/2 inch "American Racing Torque Thrust D" wheels, mounted on 1/2 inch diameter lug nut studs - leaf springs moved 1 & 1/2 inch inboard on each side for tire/wheel clearance (no need for a 'mini-tub') - 1 inch thick aluminum lowering blocks.

Drivetrain:

TRANSMISSION: T-5 "Tremec" "Ford World Class" 'aftermarket' years 79 thru 93 V8 Mustang 5 speed manual with cobra tapered roller pocket bearing ~ gear ratios: (1st) - 2.95, (2d) - 1.94, (3d) - 1.34, (4th) - 1.1, (5th) - 0.63, (Rev) - 2.76 - torque capacity: 330 ft/lbs - 1&1/16" 10 Spline Input; 28 Spline Output - years 87 thru 93 Mustang bellhousing, pressure plate, fly wheel, and clutch disc - cable actuated clutch. A 3 & 1/2 inch diameter "Ford Racing" Mustang, years 79 thru 95, aluminum drive shaft hooks this all up to the rear.

REAR/AXLE: 8.8 inch, 1997 Ford Ranger, 3.73:1 ratio "Trac-Loc" posi, with narrowed tubes.

Electronics:

N/A

To-Do List:

Hmmmm? ALWAYS something!
