daretocorvair's 1965 Chevrolet Corvair

I call her Spectacular

About this Current Vehicle:

I bought this in November of 2004 from a man in Michigan. It was a solid body but basically a basketcase. I replaced the entire braking system, including a dual Master cylinder kit, redid the interior had some fun with the engine (new bearings on the pulleys, paint on the shrouds, electronic ignition, etc..) All new wiring...

It's a 1965 Corvair Corsa. It was originally turbocharged but the original engine suffered a frozen death. It now has a 110 horsepower dual carb engine on the Corsa's original 4 speed box and 3.55 positraction rear end.

Pressing on

New gear is on the good crank
block is clean
heads are halfway done

Just traded an online buddy some heater parts i had that i couldn't use for an EDIS system . OFr those of you who don't know, that's a distributorless ignition system that runs off of a gear with "teeth" and a trigger that 'reads" the teeth. It's a great system because it will always fire dead-nuts accurate.

I'm going to be controlling it with a Megajolt Lite Jr V4 from Autosport Labs. It's a controller that works from a fully user-created ignition map, including advance/retard...everything.

Should be a lot of fun.

Chased all the threads in the block after cleaning it up.. here's a picture of the cleaned/chased product

outside...

still need to have the rods pressed on, and get my clearances checked so I can order bearings. Clark's Corvair Parts is having a sale on some of their older stock of new bearings so i'd like to get it done soon so i can get a good deal on the bearings..

then I'm basically good to put the thing together.

Gotta pay the head-man too. He's not done yet, which is good cause I still owe him like 500 bucks.

Still building

looks like it's been a few months since I've been here.

My heads are here in town being done by Johhny Reb's. He's well known in the area for doing really quality work. I asked him about doing my Corvair heads and he had no problem with that whatsoever, so off they went to him (he only is two blocks from my full time job so, that's nice.)

Still waiting on my box from Clarks for the different valves... When I started the rebuild I was going to do a 110, but now I'm rebuilding a 140, so I needed a different set of valves (140's valves are WAY larger.)

in the meantime I'm TRYING to get some money to pay him...

Things Yet to do:

Have block, front housing, rods, and crank cleaned.
Have rods pressed on pistons.
Have crank checked for bearing size
Order main and rod bearings

I don't have check rods for size on the list cause I can do that part myself. I just don't want to take chances with the mains..

Gotta get my heater back together too...it's getting cold and I've got no defrost!

Rebuild

a few days ago I received my rebuild parts from Clarks. 40 over cast pistons and barrels, chrome rings, OT-10 cam, sealed power lifters, grooved rockers..

Getting a smog 110 from Terry Kalp in a couple days and I'm gonna start tear-down.

He's looking into getting some heads that will work better, and I have new nitrided valves and stock springs for it.

Having a baby here any time so I gotta be quick!

Factory Options:

Deluxe Retractors on front belts (no rear belts) Turbocharged 180hp, tinted front and rear glass, 2 speed wipers, 4 speed w/3.55 positraction, Cypress Green exterior w/fawn interior.

Exterior Modifications:

Now 2002 GM yellow, 15 inch Soft 8 Cragars with 205/60-15 Uniroyal Touring Traks.

Interior Modifications:

1986 Toyota Celica Bucket seats, custom cut carpets, fatmat under rear, Eclipse deck, Dual 10" subs.... Not hooked up to anything yet!

Performance:

The fun part...just finished a complete rebuild on a higher output engine..

140 horsepower Corvair engine with these modifications: Higher lift Cam, bored .040 over, TRW powerforged pistons with coated skirts, nitrided valves with new springs (I went stock springs instead of heavy duty because it's not "that" much more lift and I don't usually race this car into the higher RPMS)

I'm currently finishing up a Megajolt V4 EDIS distributorless ignition system, which will allow me to completely fine tune my advance curves.

Suspension/Chassis:

stock springs, monroe shocks up front, NOS sears in back (they work.), rebuilt trans mounts, rebuilt motor mount, big original sway bar up front..

does rebuilt steering and a nylon pitman arm bushing count too?

Drivetrain:

80w90 Amsoil synthetic gear oil. new shift coupler and bronze shifter rod bushings bigger rims, shorter tires.

Electronics:

lol, an old pioneer CD player and two 5 inch speakers. the Dual 10's in back are not hooked up and might not ever be.

To-Do List:

Finish stereo system, rebuild rear end. finish EDIS (this weekend!)

thats one sweet corvair - it is really nice to see that there are quite a few of them still around and how do you think that would run with an STI engine in it?
