1972 Plymouth Duster

About this Current Vehicle:

This is my 72 Duster. She is an Original 318/904 car and with about 200,000 miles on her when I picked her up, (never underestimate a 318). I got the car four years ago when I was 19 from a tweeker across town and talked him down to $1800. In a way I have rescued this poor car, and in another way I just took her from one melting pot to another. Burnouts, 25,000 miles, and numerous beatings later, I realized I am torturing this poor, stock Plymouth so I took her off the road and rested her in the shop.

With that being said, I have moved onto a new power plant-- the Chrysler 360, and my plan for a 'true' Street Car that can pull a 14 second quarter mile with freeway gears. I upgraded the front suspension to big bolt pattern and have a big bolt pattern 8 3/4 rear. The plan is to dress up the 360/408 stroker with a '318 Four Barrell' pie plate. I will admit that the innocent look I am going for will be hard to keep with a mini-tub though, but I have seen it done subtly.

Factory Options:

Originally a 2 barrel 318 car with Drums all the way around and small bolt pattern. Bench seat and column shift.

Exterior Modifications:

Cragar S/S and a brand new Grille.

Interior Modifications:

Bucket Seats out of a 1992 Eagle Talon (hey, they're still Mopar, and comfortable as hell!!!) Other than the ruined dash pad, the interior will stay gorgeous and stock. I will likely go with a 3 point cage for good measure.

Performance:

Mopar 360 block--To a Hughes 408, forged crank and rods .30 over Keith Black pistons, Windage Tray, Mopar Purple Cam & Lifters, Eddy Air Gap, Eddy 800cfm, Hedman Shorty's, X-Pipe and either Flomaster Ultra 40's or Dynomax Super Turbos

Heads-possibly keep stock (still deciding on the head work-likely go 2.02/1.6 intake and exhaust valves, new springs, keep stock rocker panel), or go with Eddy RPM's

A 20 gal fuel cell (mini-tub) and Battery relocation to trunk will help with traction.

Suspension/Chassis:

73-up disk brake conversion with Moog Chassis Parts, 318 torsion bars, front and rear sway bars, Sub-Frame connectors, XHD springs with a Mini-Tub.

Cragar S/S with 195/60/15 up front and 295/50/15's rear with Monroe shocks (for now) up front and C-Body Rear Shocks (for now). I will upgrade to KYB Gas-A-Just shocks later to both stick the car to the ground and to adjust for if we see the track.

Drivetrain:

Mopar 360 (stroked to 408)/TF 904/8.75 rear

Mopar 360: Enough said. This is a smokin' small block that puts out adequate torque across the power band and as I have discovered are the cheapest and most effective of the Chrysler Small blocks to build, I just need a flexplate for the External/Internal balance coversion. The 408 stroker will make my freeway gears streetable around town.

I am going to keep my TorqueFlite A-904. These transmissions get a bad rap, but it's mostly B.S. and ignorance. This a tough little auto when built right and they will hold in excess of 450hp. These are lighter, quicker, and take less rotating weight than the ever popular SB 727. It will get a B&M flexplate, bolt in sprag, low band application, new clutches, shift kit, etc. The plan is to keep this car looking stock and streetable (factory coverter and keep my column shifter)

Chrysler 8 3/4 Rear: These set ups are strong as hell and are helluva lot lighter than 9 inch Ford or Dana 60's. I want to be able to do quick Third Member changes for all around cruising and street-strip needs. Stock C-Body axles will be narrowed with 3 inch studs.I have a set of 2.76 gears and 3.55's for this purpose, also I am investing in a 4.30 set with a mini-spool for strip surprises. I am going with the massive 11x3 drums off of a C-Body Dodge for extra weight on the rear, and stopping purposes of course.

Electronics:

Factory wiring with a CD player and 6x9's. Sorry, no GPS, DVD, or Laptop to adjust my timing for nitrous boost's etc. because I am boring.

To-Do List:

N/A

Nice Duster. Cool One of my neighbors has one in orange. Sounds great, too.
