cooltc2004's 1988 Jeep YJ

My New Daily Driver

1988 Jeep YJ

About this Current Vehicle:

Bought this vehicle because my daily driver (1995 Buick Park Ave) kept breaking on me. Last thing to break was the heater, which is vital in the winter. Found this in the paper, and ended up purchasing it. When my Bronco is completely restored, as well as my Firebird, this will be next.

Restoring my 1988 YJ (Frame part 2)

Sunday I did some more work. I flipped to frame over and started working on the underside of the frame…

With my tool of choice:

A 10 lb, 7” Disc sander with a wire brush on it. Let me tell you, THIS is a workout.

Anyways, I got busy:

Ran into a small problem, had a bolt in a bong that was just spinning freely and bolt that was broke off in the skid plate bong. Tried welding the bong to the frame, but the weld wouldn’t hold, so I cut the bolt off and dropped the bong. I figure I’ll either turn it into a stud or, if I can buy the bongs’, weld in a new bong. On the bolt that was broken off, there wasn’t enough to grab with a pipe wrench, so I drilled it out, and managed not to damage the threads too much. If I find that they aren’t satisfactory anymore, Ill either re-tap, or if I can buy the bongs’, weld in a new bong.

I was kinda disappointed at the POR-15, but now that I think about it, it makes some sense. In some spots (only some) where I didn’t remove all the paint (no rust), as I was wire brushing, some of the POR-15 started to peel off. I did the best I could to wire brush it until it stopped peeling, but I’m sure there is some I missed. When I flip the frame back over, I’ll give it a once over, and see. The good news is that where I left paint, it was not peeling, no rust, so it will prevent the rust anyways (whole point of painting the frame, not to look pretty).

And my trusty wire brush after the entire frame being wire brushed. I was machine gunned to death by flying wire, lol.

Next is to give the frame a final coat of POR-15, look into top coating it, then installing my new springs (hopefully) and working on the 8.8.

Restoring my 1988 YJ

Long story short, a small hole in the hoop of the rear drivers side frame rail rusted to hell in the matter of months. I bought a clean 1991 Jeep YJ frame and plan on building it the way I want it, hopefully for winter.

Here are my plans:
Fully POR15’ed frame
RC 4” Lift
Shocks (How are Rancho, Bilstein, KYB?)
Ford 8.8”
4.0L I6
AX-15
NP231
AA SYE
Magnaflow Exhaust

I already have the frame (mostly painted already), Ford 8.8”, AX-15 and NP231. Coming soon, if Ryan from RC is still willing to hook me up with some springs since mine are sagging, I’ll be purchasing the springs + u-bolt kit for a good price.

Like I said, I’ve been wire brushing the scale off the frame (what little there is) and putting POR-15 on the spots. After that, I’ll be giving the entire frame a nice thick coat. My shock towers from the back are in bad shape, so from the other thread I have, it looks like I’ll be fabricating those.
