Oddly this all started with my grandmother. When I was very young my grandmother worked at a Pontiac dealership as a bookkeeper. My grandfather was a mechanic at a Chevy dealership. When my father worked third shift my mother would take me to my grandparents house for dinner every week. Every week I got a matchbox car. I also visited her at the dealership from time to time. I had hundreds of these little cars. I remember a little later on in my childhood when I started to really know which cars were made by whom and the year of production based on the body style. I can recall the third generation corvette being a popular sports car in the area, there was one parked in my neighborhood. I was fascinated by the plastic car. I even remember the special edition mico machines gold corvette commercial, it took a mail in form with proof of purchases to get them.
Fast forward a little bit to my teenage years where the first car that I bought was a 1987 Buick Turbo Regal, touted as faster than the 1987 Corvette. Shortly after I started working for a company that was in the business of automotive performance. These dream cars were around me every single day. I even remember the first time I drove a Corvette, and working at a speed shop it became a common occurrence. Later on I was able to buy my first new car, a 2004 GTO. I ended up selling my Regal and GTO at times where it was the right thing to do. It allowed me to move on and now I am able to have a Corvette in my garage because of it. Not just any Corvette, but a 427c.i. powered lightweight fighter - the Z06. I'll be picking it up at the Corvette Museum early 2009.
Right after Thanksgiving 2008, I placed the order for the Z06. It was after the pre-shutdown deadline, and I was expecting it to be built in March. After checking up on the order I found out it was going to be built days before the shutdown. It ended up being assembled on Tuesday, December 23rd. Production was delayed a little bit, and it worked to our benefit. We were able to see the car come together all day and it was one of the last few that rolled off. It was a surreal tour as so many people were working their last day, and production would be cut dramatically when the plant opened back up.

On March 19th we traveled back down to the Museum to take delivery of the car and to take another tour. It was a great chance to get one of the best Corvettes ever engineered before the many plant layoffs and the GM bankruptcy.

I've had the car for 2 months now and it has nearly 600 miles on it. My only complaints are the levels of brake dust and the ease of getting rock chips on the rear fenders.
I just spent some time taking each wheel off, cleaning and waxing the wheels, and applying dressing to the tires. I also switched the stock pads for Centric Posi Quiet Semi-Metallic pads. To finish off the project I installed the APSIS Z06 splash guards to minimize rock chips.
