With the ongoing craze over gas economy and the
higher CAFE standards on the horizon, GM will purchase 50% of VM Motori. The Penske owned diesel engine company will develop GM's new 2.9-liter V6 turbodiesel. This engine should make its debut in the 2009 Cadillac CTS. VM Motori will handle the design, development, and manufacturing of the engine, while GM Powertrain Europe will work on closed-loop combustion control, electronic engine control and exhaust-gas after-treatment technologies for the engine.
