One journalist thinks so.

U.S. should reconsider traffic circles
If you’re from the New Jersey area, you display the fact that you know how to navigate ‘circles’ down the shore, with pride. The concept of traffic circles, while not totally nonexistent, is somewhat of a rarely implemented one in America. Ironically enough though, while europe undoubtedly perfected the concept, it is one that is very American in its invention.

There is a movement in this country now, according to Detroit News, to re-introduce the concept as Ann-Arbor Michigan has begun to install these traffic contraptions in their less populated residential areas, and with a decent level of efficiency.

Roundabouts installed in those locations where where stop signs or traffic lights previously stood have been shown to reduce all crashes by 39%, and serious ones by 76%, according to a study by the Institute for Highway Safety.

US Traffic Death Rate at record low
Traffic deaths in the United States declined last year, reaching the lowest level in more than a decade, the government reported Thursday. While highway traffic deaths declined last year, motorcycle fatalities increased, the government reported. While highway traffic deaths declined last year, motorcycle fatalities increased, the government reported.

There were 41,059 traffic deaths in 2007, 1,600 fewer than in 2006. The fatality rate of 1.37 deaths for every 100 million miles traveled in 2007 was the lowest on record, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in its report.

"Thanks to safer vehicles, aggressive law enforcement and our efforts, countless families were spared the devastating news that a loved one was not coming home," Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said.

California had the largest decline, 266 fewer fatalities than the previous year. The largest percentage decreases were in South Dakota and Vermont. North Carolina's death toll increased the most in the nation, up 121 over the previous year. The District of Columbia and Alaska had the highest percentage increases.

Motorcycle deaths increased for the 10th straight year. There were 5,154 motorcycle deaths last year, compared with 4,837 in 2006.

Google Maps now with Traffic Predictions

Another reason to love Google.

Google Maps now with Traffic PredictionsHot on the heels of Windows Live Maps' traffic-based directions, Google Maps unleashes its own traffic predictions. To use it, just click the Traffic button on the top of a map and then click the change link to switch between live traffic conditions and traffic predictions. The predictions are based on past traffic at those times, similar to Windows Live Maps, but the option to choose your travel time and get predictions based on when you're heading out put Google Maps' traffic predictions one up on Windows Live Maps.

Ironic: Red Light Cameras Causing More Accidents

Ironic: Red Light Cameras Causing More Accidents
Researchers at the University of South Florida Public Health have released a study that shows a significant spike in accidents at intersections that use cameras to catch light runners. Why? Drivers are more likely to slam on their brakes when the signal turns yellow, causing tailgaters to ram into them.

The spike is not insignificant. The USF study focused on Florida, and found that traffic fatalities caused by red-light running were not increasing. In fact, they account for less than 4% of the state's yearly traffic deaths. From the study:

"The injury rate from red-light running crashes has dropped by a third in less than a decade, indicating red-light running crashes have been continually declining in Florida without the use of cameras."

Is this study applicable only to Florida--with its high number of elderly drivers? No, similar studies in Virginia, North Carolina and Ontario found similar increases in crashes at intersections where cameras were installed. As for studies that show a decrease in accidents, many were funded by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a trade group for the insurance industry. Insurers tend to profit from red light cameras, because revenues go up with increased citations and accidents.

Car Insurers' Devices Track Teen Drivers

Car Insurers' Devices Track Teen DriversSeveral U.S. auto insurers have begun offering in-car cameras or global positioning equipment to help parents monitor their teenagers' driving behavior, hoping to reduce the alarming number of crashes involving young new motorists.

Industry experts say it's too soon to gauge the effectiveness of programs like American Family Insurance Co.'s Teen Safe Driver, used by the Kindermans in Madison, Wis. But the case for needing to improve highway safety for teens is compelling.

Traffic accidents are by far the No. 1 killer of U.S. teenagers, with a fatality rate four times higher than drivers aged 25-69. A total of 5,288 teens died in traffic accidents in 2005, and more than 7,000 were driving cars involved in fatal accidents.

Town Ditches Traffic Lights

Tags: traffic, driving, other

Town Ditches Traffic LightsA town council in Germany has decided the best way of improving road safety is to remove all traffic lights and stop signs downtown.

From September 12, all traffic controls will disappear from the center of the western town of Bohmte to try to reduce accidents and make life easier for pedestrians.

In an area used by 13,500 cars every day, drivers and pedestrians will enjoy equal right of way, Klaus Goedejohann, the town's mayor, told Reuters. The idea of removing signs to improve road safety, called "Shared Space," was developed by Dutch traffic specialist Hans Monderman, and is supported by the European Union.

Monderman's ideas have already been implemented in the town of Drachten in the north of the Netherlands, where all stop lights, traffic signs, pavements, and street markings have gone.

"It's been very successful there," Goedejohann said, adding that accidents in Drachten had been reduced significantly.

Gridlock in China

Tags: china, smog, traffic

Gridlock in ChinaChina is feeling the effects of its huge population buying cars. 70% of their air pollution can be attributed to exhaust fumes. Different avenues are being taken to deal with the new problem. In August, Beijing will ban one million cars (one third of the cars on the road) from driving for two weeks to test the effects on smog, new car owners have to pay $6300 dollars for license plates in Shanghai, and in Shenzhen the mayor has simply requested that the city’s residents don’t buy any more cars.
