Tesla Roadster 2.5 unveiled
Hot on the heels of Tesla Motors making headlines with its initial public offering, the electric-car maker decided to unveil the Tesla Roadster 2.5, and updated version of its popular Roadster electric sports car.

“Although development of the Model S is our main focus, this shows that we still care a great deal about improving the Tesla Roadster,” said Tesla CEO Elon Musk. “These improvements are a direct result of customer feedback and come only a year after release of Roadster 2.0, showing an exceptionally rapid pace of innovation. Where feasible, we will also offer existing customers the ability to purchase the upgrades now available in version 2.5.”

What news for the Tesla Roadster 2.5? First off a new look includes a new front fascia with diffusing vents, a new rear diffuser, directional forged wheels available in both silver and black, new seats with more comfort/lumbar support, power control hardware that enables spirited driving
in exceptionally hot climates, an optional 7″ touchscreen display with a rear back-up camera and interior sound reduction including new front fender liner material make the cabin even quieter.

The Tesla 2.5 Roadster is available for order now.

Tesla Plans Electric 3-Series

Another model to the line.

Tesla Plans Electric 3-Series
Tesla, the US-based maker of high-performance electric cars, is aiming to launch a volume-selling BMW 3-series-sized saloon by 2015 in a bid to lift total Tesla volume to around 200,000 cars a year.

Tesla’s chairman and CEO, Elon Musk, founded PayPal and a business called SpaceX that builds satellites for the US government.

He recently revealed the Tesla Model S luxury saloon, which will go into production in mid-2012, priced at around $50,000 (likely to become £50,000 in the UK). More in the jump!

That model will spawn “at least two” offshoots, probably a crossover and a coupé, and lift Tesla volume to between 30,000 and 40,000 cars per year.

The new Tesla ‘3-series’, which Musk says will be the model that finally optimises the automotive technology his engineers have been developing for all future Teslas, will further lower the entry price to the Tesla range to around $30,000 and, with offshoot models, could push total volume towards 200,000 a year.

Like the Model S, the new saloon will have a monocoque aluminium structure formed from Tesla’s own stampings, with assembly in a new Tesla factory in southern California.

Equipping the factory to make Tesla’s new models — anything up to six separate models using the same basic architecture and mechanical hardware — will require $500 million.

Tesla is also due to increase its presence in the UK and Europe with the expansion of a new European HQ in London later this year.

Tesla Totaled In Colossal Collision
This was a customer car but the customer was not driving or in the car at the time. The driver stopped at a red light behind a truck and was hit from behind by a VW Touareg driving at 80km/hour at the time of impact. The Roadster driver walked away with minor bruises.

Tesla finally drops real images of Roadster Sport

Tesla finally drops real images of Roadster Sport
It's been seven months since Tesla first announced its intentions to build the Roadster Sport, a higher performing version of its standard electric sportscar, and the Silicon Valley-based automaker has finally offered up some real high-res images of the EV along with a bevy of details on what makes the Sport extra special.

First and foremost, the Sport's hand-wound electric motor adds a bit more oomph to the already quick Roadster, taking off two-tenths of a second in the rush to 60 mph (it now checks in at just 3.7 seconds). Also included are bare carbon fiber hood louvers and rear spoiler, a push-button transmission selector to replace the aluminum shift knob and a central touch screen that displays estimated range along with the total number of oil barrels saved over a fossil-fueled automobile.

2010 Tesla Roadster gets upgrades including wifi

2010 Tesla Roadster gets upgrades including wifi
While owners of the current Tesla Roadster get the benefit of driving their bad ass electric vehicle today, people who are on the list for a 2010 model will get a few benefits that make 2009 owners jealous. Tesla Motors Club member DrComputer wrote about "a conversation with Ted at corporate" that revealed some improvements to the new cars. A tipster sent in a similar list of upgrades. The upgrades include:

* New power electronics module
* Better cooling for the power electronics
* Improved AC with variable speed fans
* Built in WiFi cards that connect the Roadster to the Internet (unless you turn the feature off) and gives Tesla the ability to interact with the car remotely. Also, this could open the door to mobile phone apps that talk to the car.
* Glove box locks when you lock the car (to leave it out with the top down)

Both sources mention the ability to switch vehicle performance modes – from Range to Standard or Performance (but not back to Range) – with the key instead of needing to change modes via the screen. There has been no official confirmation about these upgrades, but none of them would surprise us if they were true.

Finance a Tesla Roadster through Bank of America

Get green to go green.

Finance a Tesla Roadster through Bank of America
There you are - looking to go green but still wanting to stay cool. After looking over the limited choices you have for electric-vehicles, you narrow it down to the Tesla Roadster; however, the only problem is you don’t have the $109,000 it costs to purchase the Tesla.

Well, Bank of America has come to your rescue. Tesla Motors announced yesterday that it is offering financing for the Roadster through Bank of America.

“Owning a Roadster can result in a lower total monthly cost than a gas-guzzling sports car with a similar sticker price,” Tesla said in a statement. “Thanks to the low cost of electricity vs. gasoline, the Roadster costs roughly $4 to fully recharge - a bargain even when gasoline costs less than $1 per gallon.”

Bank of America will directly finance, document, and service vehicle loans for customers, providing a very easy online interface for these services. All agreements and payments will be between the customer and Bank of America.

Tesla said that it also plans to offer financing for the Model S sedan.

Tesla Motors to open seven stores this summer

Tesla is gaining serious ground state-side.

Tesla Motors to open seven stores this summer
Tesla announced yesterday that it will open a total of seven regional sales and service centers this summer. In the United States, Tesla plans on opening a store in New York, Seattle and Chicago in June. Following those three stores Tesla will open up shop in Miami.

Later this month, Tesla will open a store in London, followed by Munich and Monaco.

“Tesla takes its showroom cues from Apple, Starbucks and other customer-focused retailers,” Tesla said in a statement. “Tesla stores provide a welcoming spot to surf the Web, test drive cars and learn more about Tesla, the only production automaker selling highway-capable EVs in North America or Europe.”

“We are rethinking almost every aspect of the automobile - from the powertrain to the customer experience, both online and in our stores,” said Tesla CEO and Product Architect Elon Musk.

Earlier this week, Tesla announced that it delivered its 500th Roadster in the United States. The California-based automaker will begin producing the $128,500 Roadster Sport later this month.

It has also received over 1,000 reservations for the Model S sedan.

Tesla teams with Daimler

The German automaker buys an almost 10% stake in the San Carlos company.

Tesla teams with Daimler
German automaker Daimler said today it had bought an almost 10% stake in Tesla, giving a financial boost to the California-based electric car company.

Daimler, which owns Mercedes-Benz, didn't disclose the amount of the investment, saying only that, when priced in euros, the amount was in "eight figures."

In January, Daimler selected Tesla to provide batteries and chargers for the German company's Smart EV electric car. The investment in Tesla "enables the partners to collaborate even more closely on the development of battery systems, electric drive systems and in individual vehicle projects," the companies said in a press release.

Tesla currently makes the $109,000 all-electric two-seat roadster. In March, the San Carlos-based company unveiled a prototype of its $57,400 Model S electric sedan. Tesla plans to build the car, which gets 160 to 300 miles on a single charge-up depending on the version, at a plant in Southern California beginning in late 2011.

Tesla Roadster runs for 241 miles in e-rally

On a single charge of the battery, too!

Tags: tesla, roadster, electric, green

Tesla Roadster runs for 241 miles in e-rally
As an answer to those who say e-cars will never take off because their range is limited, this isn't at all bad. A Tesla Roadster managed to cover 241 miles on a single charge while taking part in the Rallye Monte Carlo d'Energies Alternatives.

Organised by the Automobile Club of Monaco, the annual rally is open to cars powered by just about any 'alternative' fuel source, such as LPG, ethanol or even petrol-powered hybrid drives.

The rally course runs 390km (241 miles) from the town of Valance in France to the Principality of Monaco and covers a mixture of trunk roads, motorways and single-carriageway roads that wind through the mountains.

This year's all-electric entrants included a Ruf-modified Porsche 911 and a handful of Mitsubishi iMiEVs but it was the Tesla that stole the e-car laurels by managing to get cross the finishing line with an indicated 61km (38 miles) of juice left in the battery pack.

That would give the Roadster a theoretical maximum touring range of nearly 280 miles – 36 miles more than Tesla itself reckons the car will cover on a charge.

If the numbers stand up to official scrutiny, Tesla will hold the world record for the longest distance travelled by a production electric car on a single charge.

Tesla's $50,000 Four Door Model S Electric Sedan

Two pictures leak!

Tesla's $50,000 Four Door Model S Electric Sedan
What's most interesting to tech enthusiasts is the fact that the middle panel seems to be one gigantic screen. Is it touchscreen? I damn well hope so.

The pure electric car manufacturer has already delivered $100,000 Roadsters, which are fun to drive, but get into accidents easily. (I saw one myself last week.) Even Governor Schwarzenegger wants to return his, but only because he's slightly too big to fit. The S, on the other hand, can be quite an interesting step in electric car design and manufacturing of Tesla actually manages to deliver enough of them to service more than just a niche market.

By the way, the price is only $50,000 once you factor in the $7500 in tax credit. It actually starts at a base price of $57,400.

Tesla lifts the skirt on the Model S

Expect to see it all March 26th.

Tags: tesla, model s, electric, green, domestic

Tesla lifts the skirt on the Model S
A couple months back, we got a glimpse of the rear bumper of Tesla's Model S via a BusinessWeek article on the company. Early this morning, we finally got an official shot from the company that provides some real clues. Given the past history between Tesla and Fisker Automotive, the obvious comparison is with the Karma. One difference that's immediately obvious is the length of the nose. Since Tesla opted to go with batteries only for energy storage, designer Franz von Holzhausen didn't have to accommodate a range extender under the hood. The whole car appears to be at least a foot shorter than the Karma.

At this point, Tesla plans to offer the Model S with several battery options; the base setup will provide a 160 mile nominal range. Like the Roadster, the motor in the Model S drives the rear wheels. We'll be seeing the rest of the car on March 26, by which time Tesla hopes to have a final decision on its DOE loan application so that they can make other announcements about production.

Tesla says electric sedan needs U.S. loan

Well if everyone else is getting a hand out, why not Tesla?

Tags: tesla, electric, sedan

Tesla says electric sedan needs U.S. loan
Tesla Motors Inc., the maker of a luxury electric sports car, will delay the introduction of its less-expensive sedan if the company doesn't receive a $350-million U.S. government loan, Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said.

The loan will help develop a four-door sedan to be priced at $57,499, Musk said Tuesday in an interview. The closely held company won't open a $250-million manufacturing facility in San Jose, Calif., without the aid, he said.

"We can't move forward with that without a major amount of capital," Musk said. "If we don't get any government funding, then what we need to do is we need to wait until the capital markets recover, which could be a year or two years from now."

Tesla, based in San Carlos, Calif., is applying for loans under a $25-billion Energy Department program created by Congress to encourage the development of energy-efficient vehicles. Lawmakers and the Bush administration are debating using $15 billion from the fund to extend loans to General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC.

Tesla Motors SVP Darryl Siry Resigned

Chaos continues at Tesla Motors...

Tesla Motors SVP Darryl Siry Resigned
We just got word that the turmoil at Tesla Motors is continuing as SVP for Marketing and Sales Darryl Siry has tendered his resignation. According to the post on Siry's personal blog, he is leaving "due to some disagreements in strategy." We talked to Siry but he declined to elaborate any further on the specifics of the disagreements. Recently, Chairman Elon Musk took over direct control of the company when he replaced previous CEO Ze'ev Drori at the silicon valley startup. Apparently Tesla has already found a replacement and Siry has been working to manage the transition in recent weeks. Siry has no immediate plans for where to go next, but promises to do more blogging on the alternative fuel vehicle industry.
