Car and Driver Lightning Lap is back

And the ZR1 is top dog.

Car and Driver Lightning Lap is back
Car and Driver is back with its annual Lightning Lap roundup for a sixth year, with 20 of the world's best vehicles taking to Virginia International Raceway to lay down the quickest time around VIR's 4.1-mile Grand West Course.

Included in this year's running is a suitably diverse spread of sports cars and sedans, ranging from the lowly Volkswagen Jetta GLI to the formidable Porsche Panamera Turbo S – a difference of 350 horsepower and over $168,000. And, just to add a bit more spice to the festivities, C/D introduced a new class (LLT) to include two trucks in the running: the BMW X5 M and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.

But what C/D gives, it taketh away. Gone is the LL5 class ($250,000 and up) and so are the LLU cars, like the Mosler MT900S, the current Lightning Lap champion. And we're perfectly okay with that. After all, we're more interested in how the Lotus Evora S hangs with the Porsche Cayman R and where the BMW 1 Series M Coupe stacks up against the Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca – and not just for convoluted naming conventions.

DRIVE goes inside the 24 Hours of Nürburgring
The first episode of DRIVE has been unleashed, and Leo Parente and crew hopped a flight to Germany to provide an in-depth look at the Nürburgring 24 Hour race.

DRIVE's opening salvo is part of a new bi-weekly motorsports show entitled Shakedown, with Parente manning the mic and providing race reports throughout the year.

Part mini-doc, part fanboy journey, Shakedown provides a glimpse into the Green Hell's most intriguing and chaotic road race, and finally answers the question: what do those flashing blue lights mean?

Escort Live SmartCord meets the cloud

Radar detection has taken the next step.

Escort Live SmartCord meets the cloud
If you use a radar detector for your ride that is from Escort or Beltronics a new power cord is launching soon from Escort that will fit more than a million of those radar detectors already in the wild. This cord does more than just hook the radar detector to your power source. The Escort Live SmartCord Live bundle will connect your detector to the cloud for real time updates on just where the man is in your town.

The SmartCord Live is a power cord that will replace the cord on existing compatible detectors. The cord has Bluetooth connectivity inside and will connect to either Android smartphone or the iPhone using an available app. When connected to your smartphone and the detector senses a laser speed detector it will automatically upload that data to the cloud and warn other drivers in the area.

This allows the smartphone running the app to show a laser detected indicator before you are in range of the speed trap. The alerts the system sends are displayed with band, signal strength, and frequency notifications. This allows you to get an approaching live alert warning that will show you a directional arrow to the alert and a distance to the source in case the speed trap is still in place. The cloud network access requires a subscription and the subscription will cost $79.95 through 2012 with the special power cord.

2013 Ford Mustang to get gauge and track apps?

Step it up, GM!

2013 Ford Mustang to get gauge and track apps?
It looks as if the 2013 Ford Mustang will receive a 4.2-inch LCD screen in its gauge cluster. Stang TV has gotten its hands on some photos of a few dealer training posters introducing the new tech, and the screen can be configured to display all sorts of important vehicle information.

In addition to standard data like transmission and coolant temperature, owners will be able to keep an eye on cylinder head temperature, the air/fuel ratio and more. Now this is the kind of advance we get behind. Ford also appears to be readying a number of apps that drivers will be able to access through the screen.

Chief among those is a track app that can keep tabs on you information like eighth mile, quarter mile, 0-60 and 0-100 mile-per-hour times. Drivers will even be able to measure braking performance. It all sounds like a lot of gadgetry to play around with in a safe, controlled environment.

8 Car Crash at the Nurburgring

That is some expensive

Tags: nurburgring, crash, wreck, other

8 Car Crash at the Nurburgring
The Nürburgring is widely regarded as the ultimate testing ground for cars and drivers alike. Needless to say, it’s often a breeding ground for excessive speed, overestimation of driving skills and recklessness, all three of which came together today in an eight car crash in the ‘Ring’s Bergwerk section. Included in the eight cars was a rented Corvette Z06 and the famous BMW M3 ‘Ring Taxi.

The accident was caused by a driver who came into the "Bergwerk" section at too high a speed. The driver slammed on his brakes, slid, and crashed into the car in front of him. His car then continued to hit two other cars also in the area. Three cars trailing this scene managed to slow down in time to avoid the accident, but the BMW M3 Ring Taxi could not unfortunately. It crashed into one of the slowing cars in front of it and then crashed into the pile of cars in front.

The pile up resulted in over 100,000 euro total damage.

When all was said and done, seven of the eight cars were not drivable and one driver was sent to a local hospital in serious condition.

15-year-old wins IMSA series in Porsche 911 GT3Cup

Most 15 year olds can't even drive.

15-year-old wins IMSA series in Porsche 911 GT3Cup
This weekend, Madison Snow clinched the 2011 IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge at the series’ stop at Laguna Seca. At first this would sound like just another champion driver winning their series until you find out that Madison isn’t even old enough to legally drive. He’s 15.

So how does a kid who doesn’t own a driver’s license come to win one of the most intense race series in the world? First, the name Snow should sound familiar to those who follow motorsport. Madison is the son of Melanie Snow, a local veteran racer from Pleasant Grove who just got drafted into the first all-women driver crew in ALMS history. His family has a history and we think it’s a safe bet to assume he’s living up to their speed-filled expectations.

Secondly, Madison was brought up behind the wheel of a kart. He is a product of numerous karting series at Miller Motorsports Park, which eventually lead to numerous sessions behind the wheel of a Mustang at the racetrack’s Ford High Performance Racing School. Looks like he paid attention well, because on Sunday Snow drove his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup over the finish line to clinch the title well before the end of the season thanks to a full 47-point lead over the series’ second place driver. That’s not a win. That’s a landslide. He’s even got one more race at Road Atlanta, one that he says he’ll be able to “just have fun out there.”

Video: F1 Drivers Do Laps in the SLS AMG
There's a good reason why Formula One teams make two cars with one seat each instead of one car with two seats. Well, there are a lot of good reasons, actually, one of which is being that F1 drivers don't like riding shotgun, something that is immediately apparent after watching this video.

Even when Infiniti took Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber to the Nürburgring Nordschleife in preparation for the German Grand Prix last weekend on the neighboring circuit, they gave each driver his own car, even though they each packed five seats. Now it's time for Mercedes-Benz to take its turn, bringing its own talents to the storied Green Hell for a little fun and publicity footage.

After Michael Schumacher took his junior teammate Nico Rosberg around the legendary track for a quick tour, it was Rosberg's turn to chauffeur his employer's new brand ambassador, David Coulthard, for a hot lap in the SLS AMG. This, despite the fact that Rosberg had never driven the circuit before. Good thing DC only found out that particular bit of information after the lap was done.

Forza 4 Gets a Voice

Jeremy Clarkson to narrate the new installment in the series.

Tags: forza, xbox360, videogames, other

Forza 4 Gets a Voice
Jeremy Clarkson is coming to an Xbox near you. The Top Gear presenter has reportedly joined forces with Turn 10 Studios to lend his voice and automotive knowledge to the company's upcoming Forza 4 video game.

There's a portion of Forza 4 called AutoVista, which is an in-game showroom where players can examine cars in great detail. Clarkson provides commentary in this area of the game, giving players his voiced-over viewpoint on specific cars.

We can only hope and assume that the commentary will include some of Jezza's trademark catchphrases like "...in the world." Regardless, adding Clarkson only rounds out the amount of Top Gear goodies found in the new game, all of which should be enough to have at least a few Sony PS3 owners considering making the switch to Microsoft's Xbox 360.

McLaren signs 13-year-old karting champ

And you were setting Mario Kart records at that age.

McLaren signs 13-year-old karting champ
Eighteen years ago, a young Lewis Hamilton walked up to Ron Dennis, introduced himself and told the McLaren chief he wanted to drive for him one day. Thirteen years later he was, and the year after that he won the world championship. It was a turning point in F1 teams recruiting young talent, and one that McLaren is keen to continue.

With other teams launching similar programs, the Woking-based outfit has announced the McLaren High Performance Programme. Such a program could by itself refer to just about anything, from the onboard computer in the new MP4-12C to the three-legged race at the company picnic. But here it refers to the team's young talent program, and along with it McLaren has announced its first new recruit.

Nathan Aston is only 13 years old, but, after winning the Formula Kart Stars Cadet championship, has been signed to a new dream deal with McLaren – not unlike the deal that Ferrari signed last year with 11-year-old Canadian karting champ Lance Stroll. Give it another few years – okay, maybe more than a few – and we could be seeing the two of them dicing it up for the F1 world championship.

Tony Stewart and Lewis Hamilton swap cars

Worlds colliding!

Tags: nascar, f1, racing, video, other

Tony Stewart and Lewis Hamilton swap cars
As far as racing disciplines go, F1 and NASCAR may appear to have about as much in common as soccer and the NFL; they may be classified under the same banner, but that's about the extent of it. But recent years have seen more crossover than ever before.

Juan Pablo Montoya may be the first among contemporary F1 drivers making a name for themselves in NASCAR, but he's hardly the last. Scott Speed has made the jump, as has Kimi Raikkonen. And there's sure to be more to follow. But the latest crossover just took place at Watkins Glen, where Lewis Hamilton and Tony Stewart – both champions in their own series – swapped cars for the day, just as planned.

Stewart slithered into the cockpit of Hamilton's McLaren-Mercedes MP4-23, while Hamilton climbed into Stewart's No. 14 Chevrolet Impala. The experience was a first for Hamilton, who was keen to put his disastrous weekend in Montreal behind him and have a little fun. And it was a first for Stewart too, but this wasn't the first time he drove an open-wheel racer, having wracked up the IRL title in 1997, or his first time at The Glen, where NASCAR races every year.

The track is one of the few in the world to have hosted both NASCAR and F1, making this an ideal meeting place for a bit of a culture clash, enabled by Mobil1, which sponsors both their cars.

GM Overhauls Certified Pre-Owned

New Name, New Features

Tags: gm, certified, other

GM Overhauls Certified Pre-Owned
Starting Saturday, two years of standard maintenance including oil changes will be part of purchasing a Certified Pre-Owned Chevrolet, Buick or GMC vehicle as General Motors moves to tie pre-owned cars, trucks and crossovers to its brands.

Owner Care, a first in the certified pre-owned vehicle industry that includes a two-year/30,000-mile standard vehicle maintenance program, will cover oil changes based on each vehicle’s Oil Life Monitor system, tire rotations, and multi-point vehicle inspections at no charge to the customer.

The Certified Pre-Owned program bearing the Chevrolet, Buick and GMC names will continue to offer a 12-month/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, and a five-year/100,000 mile limited powertrain warranty with 24-hour roadside assistance and courtesy transportation. A more rigorous 172-point inspection – increased from 117 points – and reconditioning along with free trials of OnStar and Sirius/XM Satellite Radio will remain standard.

“Customers demand more value for their money, and we have responded,” said Jennifer Costabile, general director of marketing and sales support, GM Fleet and Commercial Operations. “We believe our enhanced program offers our customers an outstanding experience from the moment they drive their Chevrolet, Buick or GMC Certified Pre-Owned vehicle off of the lot.”

The GM Certified Used Vehicle brand in the United States is being phased out. The Cadillac Certified Pre-Owned program will continue unchanged.
