The latest potential contender for muscle-car star status out of California is the Jim Wagners Signature Edition GTO, a car to be built based off original 1969 Pontiac GTO bodies but claimed as "all new from the ground up."
The cars are nothing if not patriotic. They will get a chassis from the California-based Roadster Shop, a Pontiac V8 engine, a Viper-spec TR6060 six-speed transmission, a 3.73-geared Ford rear end and a DSE C6 Corvette front suspension.
Styling touches include an "aggressive" front air dam, custom grilles with electric hide-away headlights and HID headlamps, a functional ram air hood and a custom ducktail spoiler. The HRE-sourced wheels are Jim Wangers Signature Edition Rally IIs, 19 inches in front and 20 in the rear.
The Wangers' interior has leather Recaro seats, keyless entry, air conditioning and "a killer audio system," to modernize the retro-look car. As the company says, "This is the car Pontiac should have made but didn't." Wangers will show off the GTO at a "Tour de Wangers" in Oceanside in mid-October. No word yet on pricing or availability.

Rarely, a literary masterpiece can be found on Craigslist. Thanks to chipsahoy, one has been found for a 2004 GTO that has hit the sale block. Hit the jump for a funny read... oh, and if you buy the car, you get free MC Hammer pants!
"OK, let me start off by saying this Pontiac is only available for purchase by the manliest of men (or women). My friend, if it was possible for a vehicle to sprout chest hair and a five o'clock shadow, this GTO would look like Tom Selleck. It is just that manly.
It was never intended to drive to the mall so you can pick up that adorable shirt at Abercrombie & Fitch that you had your eye on. It wasn't meant to transport you to yoga class or Linens & Things. No, that's what your Prius is for. If that's the kind of car you're looking for, then just do us all a favor and stop reading right now. I mean it. Just stop.
This car was engineered by roughneck, crocodile killing, dingo screwing, shrimp on the barbie Fosters drinking Aussies to serve the needs of the man that cheats death on a daily basis. They didn't even consider superfluous nancy boy amenities like navigation systems (real men don't get lost), heated leather seats (a real man doesn't let anything warm his butt), or On Star (real men don't even know what the hell On Star is).
No, this brute comes with the things us testosterone-fueled super action junkies need. It has a 410 RWHP engine to outrun the cops. It's got special blood/gore resistant upholstery. It even has a first-aid kit in the back. You know what the first aid kit has in it? A pint of whiskey, a stitch-your-own-wound kit and a hunk of leather to bite down on when you're operating on yourself. The GOAT also has a six speed transmission so if you're being chased by Libyan terrorists, you'll still be able to shoot your machine gun out the window and drive at the same time getting 23MPG. It's saved my bacon more than once.
It has room for you and the three hotties you picked up on the way to the gym to blast your pecs and hammer your glutes. There's a tow hitch to pull your 50 caliber anti-Taliban, self cooling machine gun. I also just put in a new windshield to replace the one that got shot out by Al Qaeda.
My price on this bad boy is an incredibly low $15,900, but I'll entertain reasonable offers. And by reasonable, I mean don't walk up and tell me you'll give me $5,000 for it. That's liable to earn you a Burmese-roundhouse-sphincter-kick with a follow up three fingered eye-jab. Would it hurt? Hell yeah. Let's just say you won't be the prettiest guy at the Coldplay concert anymore.
There's only 59,000 miles on this four-wheeled hellcat from Planet Kickass. Trust me, it will outlive you and the offspring that will carry your name. It will live on as a monument to your machismo.
Now, go look in the mirror and tell me what you see. If it's a rugged, no holds barred, super brute he-man macho Chuck Norris stunt double, then contact me. I might be out hang-gliding or BASE jumping or just chilling with my ladies, but I'll get back to you. And when I do, we'll talk about a price over a nice glass of Schmidt while we listen to Johnny Cash.
To sweeten the deal a little, I'm throwing in this pair of MC Hammer pants for the man with rippling quads that can't fit into regular pants. Yeah, you heard me. FREE MC Hammer pants."

Now this would get some attention. Two 88mm turbos feed this 454 ci. motor and cranks out 2,200HP. Hello! The car is an all steel body, full interior with clean title built by well-known Nelson's Racing Engines. It may set you back $160,000, but hey.. this is a badass goat.

CSI fans will enjoy next week's upcoming episode. GTO owners will not enjoy the plot, though. As seen in the video, Horatio will be unlocking the mystery behind this freak accident. I'll be sure to hug my GTO after the episode.
The horror, the horror!

The saddest part of this "do up" is that it looks very costly to achieve the look this owner was going for.. and wow. Rear fascia mesh - superb. Two-tone paint jobs are too predictable, let's do three. Wait! We need some mesh all over the front. The sides are missing something... oh, I got it! Fake vents. Hell, Buick does them - it will look look sweet! Top it off.. decals. Yeah, decals man.

Numbers are in from one camp, Haddad Motorsports, who got their hands on the new G8. Here's an overlay of a bone stock LS2 GTO A4 with ~7k miles on it and their G8 with 17 miles on it (after several brake in runs).
The solid line represents the G8 numbers. This G8 also pulled off a 13.7 at 101 sprint down the 1320'. With a little bit more break in time, a tune, and some nice weather and this car will be undoubtedly in the bottom 13's.

GM Holden today marked the diamond anniversary of its first all Australian car by unveiling a stunning two-door performance thoroughbred called Coupe 60.
Coupe 60 celebrates the six decades since GM Holden built the 48-215 at its Fishermans Bend plant in Port Melbourne, Victoria, and provides a glimpse of Holden’s future directions in design, engineering and emerging engine technologies.
Exemplifying sports luxury, Coupe 60 is a pillarless concept car that explores the limits of Holden’s current rear-wheel drive capabilities, combining racing looks and technology into a road going sportscar experience.
Its sophisticated appearance is delivered through simple and powerful design, highlighted by the pillarless construction and V8 supercar inspired cockpit layout and side-exiting chambered exhaust system with billet alloy tips.
Almost 60mm shorter than the VE sedan, and sitting on 21-inch centre-lock alloy wheels with unique design Kumho high performance semi-slick tyres, Coupe 60 captures all that’s exciting about the Holden DNA.
Other racing-derived enhancements include full flat under body, rear underbody air diffuser and functional rear deck-lid spoiler with unique designed LED tail lamps.
The interior also has several unique features. They include one piece carbon fiber bucket seats (featuring leather and suede pad design) and a sports-inspired flat bottomed steering wheel with integrated shift light display and LCD sports instrument cluster.
The high gloss carbon fiber carries through to doors and rear trim providing a contrast to the leather trimmed instrument panel and black suede trimmed pillars, headliners and parcel shelf.
Details and accents are picked out with a distinctive red high shine leather on the seats and dark gunmetal finish and satin chrome on the consoles and doors.
Front seats are adjustable fore and aft to allow easy access to the rear, with four-point race harness restraints for all seating positions.
Under the bonnet is just as forward looking, with a 6.0 litre V8 engine incorporating the latest technologies such as active fuel management and calibrated for E85 ethanol fuel.
Even the paint is a one-off. Called ‘Diamond Silver’ by Holden designers, it gives a liquid aluminium finish that almost slides off the bodywork.
GM Holden Chairman and Managing Director Mark Reuss said, “Coupe 60 is Holden's 60th anniversary gift to its fans worldwide.
“It highlights Holden’s heritage of rear wheel drive performance whilst looking ahead to the potential offered by new technologies and materials.
“This is a vehicle I know our designers would dearly love to see go into production, but for the moment it has to remain a concept only,” he said.
Project Designer Manager, Peter Hughes, said, “We were looking to mark the diamond anniversary with a car that captured the Holden DNA and took the current VE range to an exciting next step.
“Even in the early stages of VE development, we knew there was a sensational coupe waiting to get out and the 60 th anniversary has given us the chance to explore that.
“With Coupe 60 we think we have designed a car that has the potential to write another chapter in the book of Holden icons.”

Pillarless coupe body;
Derived from flexible GRWD platform;
VE sedan wheelbase.
Powertrain:

Set to debut at the Melbourne Autoshow in a few days. Rough info has been posted on CamaroZ28.com and LS1GTO.com.
What does the '60' stand for? Perhaps it relates to GM Holden’s 60th anniversary of its first ever car, the 48-215, which was built at Fisherman’s Bend, Melbourne Australia.
Read this quote carefully:
2008 is a diamond year for GM Holden which will be recognizing a number of key anniversaries during the year. These include the 60th anniversary of Australia’s Own Car – the 48-215, the 50th anniversary of the founding of Holden Vehicle Operations, Elizabeth, 30 years of the Commodore nameplate, 40 years since the introduction of Monaro and the General Motors centennial.
This is a quote from CZ28.com:
Some facts on Coupe-60 for you
Number plates are billet alloy "coupe-60".
It is a Commodore 4 seater coupe, similar to the BMW and Mercedes 4 seater coupes. It has an E85 badge on the rear boot and a small lip spoiler. It has LED tail lights with a diffuser set up under the rear fascia. An almost V8 supercar front fascia sitting on roughly "22'' wheels with cut slick tyres and single centre wheel nuts. The interior has a Motec type dash and almost race type seats front and rear but leather bound. The colour is a chrome-type silver. The door panels are scalloped inwards with front vents on the guards. There are two square exhaust outlets in front of the rear wheels under each sill panel. The car has been circuit tested and is a fully functional car.
My independent sources have been involved with both the building of the car and the testing of it and getting everything ready for the show. Only a couple of sleeps left now.
Notice 'Diamond Year' and the Coupe 60 logo leaked image. Watch for more info in the next few days.

For all of those people who think Pontiac did the worst job possible stylizing the 04-06 GTO: Pontiac could have done a LOT worse. At lot #1298 at the upcoming Barrett-Jackson auction, George Barris's 04 GTO Convertible will be up for auction. Barris is famous for designing hot rods, but clearly in this design, he fell off his rocker.
A little under two months to go and we'll be seeing all sorts of awesome, along with so not so awesome, vehicles up on the auction block.

Vandenbrink Design joins the revival of special coachbuilding by presenting their design of the GTO, a tribute to the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO. The GTO was designed in 2006 by Michiel van den Brink, who founded the Vandenbrink Design company with business partner Robert Koumans in the Netherlands.
The new coachwork will be handcrafted following the classic tradition in aluminium by Dutchman Alwin Hietbrink, who is worldwide known by his excellent aluminium craftsmanship in restoration and rebuilding projects of classic Italian iconic sportscars such as the genuine Ferrari 250 GTO.
Optional interior/upholstery redesign will be performed by the Dutch craftsman Henk van Lith, also worldwide known by his specialization in the making of high quality Italian interiors.
The GTO is technically based on the superb Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano platform.
In cooperation with race engineering expert EDO Competition two versions are offered:
- the 599 GTO (5998 cc / 650 hp / 630 Nm) and
- the high performance 630 GTO (6300 cc / 750 hp / 680 Nm).
Through this unique approach the GTO offers a synthesis of automotive art, craftsmanship and state-of-the-art platform and performance engineering. Only 5 GTO's will be built for customers, guaranteeing exceptional exclusivity. Customer interest appeared solid; first coachworks have been reserved. Production will start in 2008; delivery to the first owner will be in 2009.

Have or want an 04-05 GTO? You may want to read about this before you drive around in one. Full information as follows:
The Center for Auto Safety (CAS) today called on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to open an investigation into tire failures and front suspension problems that occur on the 2004-2006 Pontiac GTO.
The agency has received 65 complaints involving tires on the 2004-2005 GTO, involving 8 blowouts and one crash. Many of these complaints cite tire wear caused by contact with struts as the source of the failures. The problem seems to occur early in the lifespan of the vehicle, as a number of complaints cite mileages of less than 10,000 at the time of the failure.
The 2004-2006 GTO was manufactured by GM subsidiary Holden in Australia based on the Holden Monaro platform. The Australian version came equipped with tires of 235mm in width, however the GTO sold in the United States was equipped with wider tires of 245mm width. The larger width of the GTO tire results in contact with the struts, wearing the tire and creating a risk of tire failures that can result in loss of vehicle control. Additionally, many GTO owners are forced to replace worn tires and damaged struts at their own expense.
The 2006 Pontiac GTO was manufactured with redesigned front struts that seem to have eliminated the tire wear problem. However, NHTSA has received more than 100 complaints of front strut failure in the 2006 model.
