2013 Ford Shelby GT500 delivers 650 HP and 200 MPH

Time to step it up, ZR1 and ZL1.

2013 Ford Shelby GT500 delivers 650 HP and 200 MPH
650 horsepower. 600 pound-feet of torque. 200-plus miles per hour. With specs like these, you don't need long-form introductions. This is the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500, and all we can say is, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has officially been put on notice.

2013 Ford Shelby GT500 engineThe heart of the new Ford stunner is a 5.8-liter, aluminum-block V8, complete with a larger, more efficient supercharger. Nearly the entire powertrain has been upgraded for 2013, including a new cross-drilled block and heads, updated camshaft profiles, a carbon fiber driveshaft and upgraded clutch, transmission and axle. The cooling system has also been upgraded, and the new six-speed manual transmission now has a final drive ratio of 3.31-to-1 – optimized to handle the massive amounts of torque put down by the new engine.

Further enhancements can be had in the GT500 Performance Pack, which incorporates SVT-designed Blistein electronic adjustable dampers with 'normal' and 'sport' modes and a Torsen limited-slip differential. What's more, the Track Package adds an external engine oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler. Like the current GT500, 19-inch wheels are standard up front (20-inch rollers are found out back) and a Brembo braking system keeps everything in check when its time to control all that force. The whole package weighs in at just 3,850 pounds – 270 less than the Camaro ZL1 – and Ford says it will not be subject to the dreaded Gas Guzzler Tax.

Visually, not too much has changed from the current GT500, save some minor aerodynamic tweaks like an ever-so-slightly revised front fascia with new air splitters, as well as a minimally tweaked rear end. Inside, it's the same levels of comfort and refinement that you'll find in the rest of the Mustang lineup, albeit with new Recaro front buckets.

2011 Ford Shelby GT500 Production Limited to 5,500
Even though the 2011 Shelby GT500 carries a base price of $49,495 without any options ticked, Ford has already received more than 3,000 orders for the 550HP Mustang since the car was announced earlier this year. But despite the sales success, the Deaborn-based automaker said today that U.S. sales of the 2011 Shelby GT500 will be limited to just 5,500 units for this model year.

"We are pleased with the pace of retail orders for the 2011 Shelby GT500," said Fritz Wilke, Mustang brand manager. "The car continues to be popular with sports car enthusiasts and collectors who are blown away by the increase in horsepower and performance. The limited production of the 2011 should make this year even more desirable."

Based on the latest Mustang, the 2011 Shelby GT500 is powered by a new aluminum-block 5.4-liter supercharged V8 engine, which churns out 550 horsepower and 510 lb.-ft. of torque.

Video: New Shelby GT500 laps VIR faster than Prior
Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) recent hit the Virginia International Raceway (VIR) to do some track testing on the 2011 Ford Shelby GT500.

Vehicle Dynamics engineer Gene Martindale piloted the 2011 Shelby GT500 coupe equipped with the new aluminum 550-hp, 5.4L engine and the optional SVT Performance Package. Martindale brought in a lap time of 2:58.48, over eight seconds faster around VIR than the 2010 model. Ford says that the lap time is comparable to six-figure supercars.

2011 GT500 Gets Aluminum Engine

2011 GT500 Gets Aluminum Engine
Ever since Ford introduced the modern Shelby GT500 four years ago, almost no one has complained about the prodigious power levels produced by its supercharged 5.4-liter V8. With as much as 540 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque in the 2010 model, there was no shortage of grunt. No, the issue was an excess of mass.

Before the contemporary GT500 was born, Ford had a blown aluminum block 5.4-liter V8 in the short lived GT supercar. However, when the engineers at Ford's Special Vehicle Team developed the GT500, they opted to mount the GT's cylinder heads on the cast iron block used in the big F-Series pickup trucks. After debuting a visual refresh for the Mustang a year ago, Ford has spent the last two months announcing fresh new powertrains for the base and GT models. That process has now come full circle with SVT rolling out a heart transplant for the Shelby GT500. The 2011 model finally has the aluminum powerplant we all wanted when it debuted, and the effect is absolutely en-lightening. Hit the source to read the full article!

Ford Shelby GT500 to get twin-turbo 5.0L V8

Just three years away..

Tags: ford, shelby, gt500, domestic

Ford Shelby GT500 to get twin-turbo 5.0L V8
Spies have caught a pack of “Coyote” powered Ford F-150 pickups undergoing hot-weather testing. The 4-valve 5.0L V8 engine is expected to pump out approximately 400-hp with a maximum torque of 400 lb-ft. Ford plans to replace the 5.4L V8 engine with the Coyote V8 in 2010. The naturally aspirated engine is expected to deliver 5.4L V8 performance while providing an increase in fuel-economy.

It was previously reported that the 2011 Mustang GT is expected to carry the new Coyote 5.0L V8 and is currently being tested in the United States.

Sources now say that Ford is also working on a twin-turbo charged version of the 5.0L V8 Coyote – code-named “Road Runner.” The engine is expected to find its way under the hood of the Shelby GT500 in 2012 and possibly under the Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson edition. It will deliver well over 500-hp.

The current 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 is powered Ford’s 5.4L V8 making 540-hp.

GT500KR: Can you afford to fix this car?

One owner found out it's not cheap!

Tags: ford, mustang, gt500kr, domestic

GT500KR: Can you afford to fix this car?
So you’ve taken out the second mortgage, told the condescending unsupportive wife to hit the road, and you’ve finally obtained your dream car. But now that you have it, and you’re most likely up to your ears in debt, ask yourself the following question:

If the worst should happen, and I damage my KR, can I afford to repair it? Hit the jump for a startling discovery!

Recently, I was contacted by the owner of a GT500KR who suffered the ill-fortune of being involved in a minor encounter with an unfortunate animal. Well, the incident wasn’t so minor for the poor four-legged contender, having been fatally wounded in the accident. Having said that, the GT500KR fared pretty well………or so we thought. Aside from a crumpled right front fender, a door that was slightly misaligned from the fender, minor hood damage, and a dislocated mirror, the car seemed to fare pretty well. It truly looked to be about $5,000 in damage in my opinion. Lord, was I wrong.

What should have been a quick and easy fix has turned into a nightmare for this Shelby owner. Not only has this person had to confront this damage every time the garage is entered, this nightmare has gone on for nearly two months. It seems that the insurance company and the manufacturer are unable to come to an agreement on how to price the hardware involved, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The damaged parts are expected to be returned. Yes folks, you read that right. You bought the car. You own the car. Every piece on that car is (should be) considered your property. Guess again. If you want this car repaired, not only will you have to jump through hoops, and back flip your way through a pile of paperwork, you’re also going to need to send those damaged parts back – at your expense, of course.

Think about this for a moment. What if some crazy delinquent steals your hood in the dark of night, thinking that might make a nice add-on for his buddy’s ’06 GT? You don’t have a hood to return, so does that mean you’re out of luck? Perhaps you should drive the car without one? Or worse yet, what happens if the part in question is so heavily damaged that there’s nothing left? Are you expected to stick around the scene of the accident, picking up the pieces of your shattered mirror with a dustpan and an evidence bag?

Yes friends, these are just a few of the little-known perks of owning an $80,000.00+ vehicle. Envious onlookers giving you the thumbs-up of approval. Prime parking at your local cruise-ins. The compulsion to park half a mile away from other cars in any parking lot, to ensure that some jerk face doesn’t throw a door into your spotless finish. And perhaps the biggest of them all, owning a car that you can’t seem to get fixed.
To further illustrate the issues at hand, I am going to share the prices that the owner was quoted for new replacement parts. It’s probably best if you take a few antidepressants and sit down while you read this.

Edited 09/09/09 to reflect updated hood and headlight prices:

Grille bezels = $690.00/pair

Headlight = $960.00/each

Wheel = $1753.55/each

Emblem kit = $201.25

Front spoiler = $3392.50

Hood = $21,000.00

Carbon fiber mirror cover = $400.00

Hood pins = $632.50

Hood vents = $661.25

Bumper stripes = $530.00

Hood stripes = $575.00

And this is how what LOOKS like $5,000 in damage turns into $31,000 in damage. Over $21,000.00 for a hood? Hell, you can buy an entire car for less than that! A car that you can fix, one in which the manufacturer and the insurance company don’t give a collective rip what you do with your old parts.
Will the GT500KR get repaired? Will it remain in a wrecked state? Will it be driven without the hood? Bookmark the source to continue the saga.

2010 Ford Mustang GT500 production limited

Only 2,000 models will be available supposedly.

2010 Ford Mustang GT500 production limited
With new sheetmetal, more power and an upgraded chassis, the new Ford Mustang GT500 was destined to be a hot for the 2010 model year. The pony king may have just just gotten a whole lot more exclusive, too, as production has reportedly been limited to only 2,000 units. Team Shelby forum member 06VistaBlueGT posted a PDF with important ordering information for dealers that explains the production cut.

Production cut on Shelby GT500. To date, 1,700 GT500s have not been scheduled and the plant only had the capacity to build 2,000 for the 2010 MY (model year). If you signed the agreement, you are guaranteed 1 Shelby GT500 for the model year.

The move figures to severely limit the amount of GT500s a dealer can order, with many likely receiving either zero or one model for the year. The good news for the 2,000 lucky owners of the GT500 is that the lower production totals could make the 2010 model the most collectible (and valuable) model since the 2007 was introduced. If you haven't already signed up for a new GT500, though, dealers may now jack up the price even higher over MSRP to capitalize on the newfound shortfall of 540 horsepower pony cars.

Video: 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 vs. 2010 Hennessey Performance HPE550 Camaro
The next-generation Chevrolet Camaro Z28 won’t arrive until 2011 - some time after the convertible Camaro makes its debut. That will give the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 some time to eat up some of the high-performance muscle car segment. However, if you can’t wait until ’some time after 2011,’ Hennessey is offering its HPE550 performance package for the Camaro that takes output up to 562-hp (the Camaro Z28 is rumored to get the 556-hp 6.2L LSA V8 supercharged engine from the Cadillac CTS-V).

The folks at Inside Line happened to have the new 2010 Shelby GT500 and Hennessey’s HPE550 on hand at the same time and decided to put the two high-performance muscle cars head-to-head.

2010 Shelby GT500 Super Snake Specs
For that small percentage of buyers that aren't satisfied with the 2010 Ford Mustang-based Shelby GT500 that packs a 5.4-liter supercharged V8 with 540 ponies under the hood, Caroll Shelby and his team have prepped an even more hardcore package called Super Snake. Due to go on sale in August, Shelby offers the Super Snake package on the GT500 in two guises, with outputs of 630 and 725 horsepower, the latter offered only on the coupe model.

2010 Shelby GT500 Mustang Super Snake Shelby achieves the power upgrades with a different supercharger kit and a new exhaust system while other mods include a cold air intake system and a custom drive shaft on the 725HP variant

To improve handling, the Super Snake package adds a race-spec suspension system with adjustable dampers, a short throw shifter and a Baer brake system with 6 piston calipers and cross drilled and ventilated discs. Customers can also opt for a more hardcore Eibach handling pack.

2010 Shelby GT500 Mustang Super Snake On the aesthetics side, Shelby adorns the basic GT500 with a unique fiberglass hood with a larger air scoop, specific stripes, numerous carbon fiber body components, sequential tail lights, quarter window scoops and of course, new 20-inch alloy wheels shod in Pirelli P-Zero rubber.

For the interior, the basic Super Snake package adds center gauge cluster, satin door lock knobs and headrests embroidered with the Shelby logo which also appears on the center console.

Once you bring in your GT500, Shelby will charge you $29,495 for 630HP package and $33,495 for the 725HP kit. In both cases, prices including installation but not the donor car - just to make it clear.

Barrett-Jackson auction and its Hi-Po Fords

Shelby GT500, F-150 SVT Raptor and a Mustang Cobra Jet on the block.

Barrett-Jackson auction and its Hi-Po Fords
The venerable Barrett-Jackson auction company's annual event here is offering a trio of high-performance Fords on Saturday night, with proceeds going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Ford is offering purchase rights to the first retail 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 and the first retail 2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, as well as a Ford Racing Mustang Cobra Jet, for the charity.

The hood of the Cobra Jet Mustang is autographed by Ford drag-racing stars John Force and Bob Glidden, among others. Winning bidders can specify color and other details for the Shelby and the F-150, Ford says.

The auction will be televised live on Saturday, January 17, at 10 p.m. Eastern time on the Speed TV network.

Ford notes that it has helped raise more than $2 million for charitable causes through car auction donations in the past few years, including a one-off, glass-roofed Ford Shelby GT500KR sold by Barrett-Jackson last year for $550,000.

The 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 has a supercharged and intercooled 5.4-liter V8 making 540 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. The 1010 F-150 SVT Raptor has a revised suspension and is more than 7 inches wider than Ford's base F-150. A racing version of the truck finished 3rd in its class in the 41st Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 this past November.

Ford adds that visitors to the Barrett-Jackson auction this week can sign up for an off-road ride in the Raptor with a veteran of desert racing at the wheel.

The Ford Mustang FR500CJ, or Cobra Jet, has a 400-hp 5.4-liter supercharged engine with drag-racing wheels and tires. It's NHRA legal and comes with an optional graphics kit. The Cobra Jet coupe comes with a six-speed manual transmission.

2010 Ford Shelby GT500 packs 540HP

The new iteration of the Shelby is here.

Tags: ford, shelby, gt500, domestic

2010 Ford Shelby GT500 packs 540HP
Using the already aggressive design of the 2010 Ford Mustang, Ford has made numerous aerodynamic upgrades including a new front end that optimizes air flow along with a new lower-drag rear spoiler. Ford has also added racing stripes this year on both the coupe and convertible models. Of course, Shelby’s exterior modifications are rounded off with the signature Cobra badges on the front grille and front fenders.

The inside of the 2010 Shelby GT500 upgrades the new interior design of the 2010 Mustang with two-tone genuine leather seats, aluminum trims on the instrument panel and Alcantara inserts on the seats and steering wheel (which this year gets an aluminum GT500 logo engraved into the center). Other interior goodies include the bright 360-degree rings surrounding the gauge cluster (seen on the 2010 Mustang) finished in Satin Liquid Chrome, a Shelby Cobra in the startup on the navigation screen, a red “SVT” logo with new ambient lighting and the classic white shift knob. More in the jump!

Ford says that the SVT team “used the gains made on the 40th anniversary edition Shelby GT500KR “King of the Road” Mustangs as the performance starting point and built from there.” The Shelby GT500KR’s 540-hp supercharged 5.4L V8 was thrown in the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500. However, the aggressive new exterior design enhances performance through a new power doom hood that helps cool the engine through a hood extractor to remove heat from the engine and a “Gurney Flap” spoiler to tune rear downforce. Shelby’s open-element air induction system features a conical air filter instead of a flat-panel closed system. Working along with a cold-air intake, that allows the 2010 Shelby GT500 to produce more power and increase the engine’s efficiency. Acceleration is improved with upgrades to the twin-disc clutch on the 6-speed manual transmission - which are now larger and are made of copper and fiberglass. Driving dynamics have been further enhanced with SVT’s chassis tuning, optimized spring and dampers and a stiffened steering shaft. The AdvanceTrac feature allows the driver with several performance options. The “on” mode helps with ever-day normal driving while “Sport” mode lets drivers loosen-up on the track.

Of course, when you buy a car like the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500, sound matters. While you may want people to know that you’re driving something powerful, you don’t want that noise filtering into the interior. The Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) team used a patented resonator placed between the air filter and engine throttle body that helps keep noise out of the interior.

The 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 coupe rides on new 19-inch wheels wrapped in Goodyear F1 Supercar tires while the convertible sits on 18s. The 2010 Shelby GT500 will hit dealers later this spring. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

Standard features on the 2010 Shelby GT500 include:

SYNC: The voice-activated hands-free in-car communication and entertainment system developed by Ford and Microsoft. The system fully integrates most Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones and digital media players, providing customers hands-free cell phone and music selection capabilities – plus new 911 Assist and Vehicle Health Report provided with no monthly fees.
911 Assist: When a phone is properly paired, turned on and connected to SYNC, the system is ready to assist in placing a call directly to a local 911 emergency operator in the event of an air bag-deploying accident. The key advantage of SYNC 911 Assist is speed, as calls are placed directly to local 911 operators.
Vehicle Health Report (VHR): SYNC gathers relevant information from the major vehicle control modules and packages diagnostic data into a usable format in a matter of minutes. That data packet is sent to Ford via an 800-number automatically dialed using the customer’s paired and operable mobile phone.
Ambient Lighting System with MyColor™ allows drivers to customize the interior lighting of the vehicle to suit their mood. The enhanced MyColor system features seven base colors – ice blue, purple, blue, orange, red, white and green. Customers also can create 125 custom colors by mixing the red-green-blue palette.

Available options include:

Voice-Activated Navigation with SIRIUS Travel Link™ is an industry-leading technology that will provide users with a unique, information-rich in-car experience. The suite of data services includes up-to-the-minute real-time traffic data with accident and incident information for 78 markets, coast-to-coast weather data including current conditions and five-day forecasts and fuel price information for more than 120,000 gas stations. SIRIUS Travel Link also offers sports scores and schedules and a listing of more than 4,500 movie theaters with movie times, theater addresses, movie synopses and more.

Already running in the wild (aka the streets of Detroit), the new Shelby GT500 is testing away with its new skin. The new GT500 shares a lot of the styling elements of the current car with double vents on the hood, a huge aggressive upper and lower grille plus the not-so-subtle stripes on the hood.

What's new is the smoothly styled rear spoiler which compliments the new back-end. New wheels finish the look. Oh, and the supercharger whine was heard.

Pro Golfer Crashes Shelby Mustang GT500!
On a golf course carved by a former tire magnate, Firestone Country Club, Sean O'Hair spent part of his day telling a story about when his rubber very much left the road, a detour that cost him a berth in a major championship.

The week before the U.S. Open in June, O'Hair took delivery on a shiny new Shelby Mustang. The 2008 model has a list price between $40,000 and $80,000. Certain high-end models generate 540 horsepower, have six-speed manual transmissions and ought to come with a HANS device and Bell racing helmet. All of which O'Hair learned exactly three days after taking possession of the street-legal rod.

While heading to a 7 a.m. workout session, O'Hair hopped into the tricked-up ride and spoke briefly with a neighbor as he tooled down his cul De sac in West Chester, Penn., where he lives with his wife and two young kids. The road was wet and 200 yards after he turned a corner, he lost control of the car and it smashed head-on into a wooden power pole. The airbag deployed, neighbors came running and O'Hair crawled out of the car, shaken and apparently unhurt. The pole was a pile of toothpicks. Being a newbie with a manual transmission, he had failed to take his foot off the gas as he shifted from first to second gear and spun the rear wheels as the gearbox reengaged, the car sliding off the road and into the pole. O'Hair estimated he was moving around 35 mph at the time -- and considering the car was still in first gear, that tells you all you need to know about the carbureted, caffeinated monster that storied racing guru Carroll Shelby created.

So the good news is, his paydays have picked up, which is nice for a variety of reasons, including the fact that his wife Jackie ordered him to find another mode of transportation. The Mustang wasn't totaled, although his wallet probably was. "She said, 'You're getting rid of the car,'" Sean said.
