Design Study: Audi R10 V10 Supercar

A cool render that could show the future...

Design Study: Audi R10 V10 Supercar
Today's concept study comes to us from Marouane Bembli, a 23-year old industrial design student from Sweden. The futuristic-looking supercar was designed as a 'halo' vehicle for Audi that would in theory, either sit atop or replace altogether the current R8 in the automaker's model range.

"I've designed what I believe will be Audi's new supercar, the R10", Bembli told Car Magazine. "It features a mid-mounted V10 engine and a dry weight of 1200kg. I hope you like it!"

Well, minus the proportions of the passenger cabin area that looks way too small when compared to the rest of the body, we must say that we find the R10 Concept pretty impressive.

Arash AF-10: A $533,066 British supercar
Say hello to a new British supercar that will run you a whopping £320,000 ($533,066 USD) – the Arash AF-10.

Power comes from GM’s 7.0L V8 found under the hood of the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 that has been retuned to produce 505-hp with a maximum torque of 475 lb-ft. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual Graziano gearbox. No performance figures have been released as of yet, but the Arash AF-10 can hit a top speed of 220 mph.

Arash has no plans of stopping there. In the future, the firm will offer an AF-10S with a supercharged and intercooled version of the 7.0L V8 that will make 800-hp. Another top-of-the-line version is planned that will produce 1,001-hp to compete with the likes of the Bugatti Veyron.

Loris Bicocchi, the man who helped develop the Koenigsegg, Bugatti Veyron and the KTM X-Bow has been signed up to do the development work, which will kick off in 2010.

Veyron Owner Ditches 250mph Supercar in Water

That's a good place to leave it, agreed?

Veyron Owner Ditches 250mph Supercar in Water
An American Bugatti Veyron owner has proved that the world's fastest supercar does not make an effective speedboat, after driving his hypercar into a saltwater lagoon near Galveston in Texas.

The owner (who apparently wished to remain anonymous - surprise, surprise) was distracted by a low-flying Pelican (we hate it when that happens) as he was heading north on Interstate 45.

As a result, the hapless fellow jerked the wheel, dropped his mobile and the car veered onto the muddy verge before plunging into the lagoon and coming to rest in approximately two feet of salty water.

He escaped with no injuries. Just an empty wallet.

Zenvo ST1 Details and Photos
Just before 2008 came to an end, Zenvo Automotive and Danish Design unveiled the new Zenvo ST1, a 1,104-hp supercar with some very aggressive looks. Well, today we get a more detailed look at the Zenvo ST1 along with some new high-res photos.

Power comes from a 7.0L V8 Bio Flex engine (98 octane or E85 or both combined) with a supercharger and a turbocharger. The combination allows for a total output of 1,104-hp with a maximum torque of 1,054 lb-ft. 0-62 mph comes in 3 seconds flat with a top speed that is limited to 233 mph. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox but Zenvo also offers the ST1 with an automatic gearbox with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.

On the inside, owners of the Zenvo ST1 can enjoy a 7 1/2 inch screen for navigation use, to play DVDs and to use the rear view camera system. The audio system has iPod/Mp3 player capability and CD/AM/FM options. Other options include a start engine button, cruise control, keyless go, power seats and power locks.

Zenvo Automotive will only produce 15 units of the ST1 so if you want one you better contact them quick.

Ferrari Plans Turbocharging

Just needs to get passed the lag...

Tags: ferrari, turbo, exotic

Ferrari Plans Turbocharging
Ferrari is considering using turbocharging in future engines, but it needs to improve the forced induction technology before it will make its cars available with the set-up. Ferrari engine developer Jean-Jacques His said the biggest problem the firm faced was lag.

“Turbocharging will come eventually, but we need to solve the issue of turbo lag,” he told Autocar. He went on to explain that a delay of any sort before the power arrived was unacceptable for a Ferrari engine.

It’s unlikely that Ferrari will be using Multiair, the Fiat Group’s variable valve technology, any time soon, though. His said Ferrari had tried applying the system to an F430’s V8 but couldn’t get it to work at the power outputs required.

“The main benefit from Multiair comes in torque,” he said, “and it is difficult to get it to work at high revs.”

His also said Ferrari’s dual-clutch transmission, currently only available in V8-engined Ferraris, was suitable for V12 cars and would work up to 10,000rpm.

SEMA 09: Meet the HTT Plethore LC-750 Supercar

Radical in every sense.

SEMA 09: Meet the HTT Plethore LC-750 Supercar
Comprised of a carbon fiber architecture and body with an integrated (and supposedly soon-to-be) FIA-certified roll-cage, the Plethora could be the first production vehicle simultaneously approved for both the road and the track, and since high-level competition is close to Chartrand's heart, it's a necessity -- he wants to see the Plethore competing in the American LeMans series.

To hang with the big boys at the upper echelons of motorsport, the Plethore has to be more than a lightweight body (2,535 pounds) and a massive stance (89 inches in the rear). So Chartrand has mounted the Corvette ZR1's LS9 longitudinally amidships and tweaked output to 750 hp. As with all start-ups, HTT plans to offer an even hotter version to the public, putting out a claimed 1,300 hp with the help of a set of turbos. More in the jump!

Currently channeling all that grunt to the ground is a six-speed manual, but there are plans to offer a six-speed sequential gearbox along with a limited-slip differential. Double wishbones are fitted at all four corners to keep the 19-inch (front) and 20-inch (rear) wheels in constant contact with the ground, with AP Racing brakes sized 15-inches in front (six-piston caliper) and 13-inches (four-piston caliper) in the rear.

Although the astronomical output and production-intensive architecture are the cornerstones of the project, the interior -- with its central mounted driving position, room for two occupants (sounds familiar) and roof-mounted switchgear -- are some of the more impressive details. That, and the hydraulically actuated doors, which swing upwards and close at the touch of a button.

Chartrand claims that production will begin sometime late this year, with a price tag of around $600,000 for the standard, 750-hp version and close to $1m for the 1,300-hp variant. Bold claims, but Chartrand isn't stopping there. "I want to design a helicopter next. It's my other love."

McLaren MP4-12C coming to U.S. in mid-2011

McLaren MP4-12C coming to U.S. in mid-2011
It was reported last month that McLaren plans to launch the MP4-12C supercar in the United States have been delayed to mid-2010. Well, according to Tony Joseph, McLaren’s regional director for North America, McLaren never had plans to launch the new supercar in the stateside in 2010.

Joseph said that the MP4-12C will arrive in the United States and Canada in mid-2011, six months after the first units of the coupe roll out of McLaren’s UK factory. Look out for the first MP4-12C units sometime in May or June 2011.

As for the LA Auto Show launch in December, Joseph said that McLaren had discussed the possibility of displaying the MP4-12C in LA but decided that it “was too early for our launch plan.”

2010 Porsche Panamera Off To Flying Start

2010 Porsche Panamera Off To Flying Start
Porsche, the once unassailable leader in the sports car segment, has proven that it's not completely immune from global economic conditions but the brand is at a crossroads and a raft of new models could see it rise to the top once again.

This turn around is being led by the new 2010 Porsche Panamera, which has already racked up 983 firm orders and will allow the automaker to record flat or slightly increased sales this year. This has got to be very good news for Porsche, which is coming off a year that saw sales in the U.S. drop 32% to 14,310 units through September after declining 25% in all of 2008 to 26,035 units.

The information comes from Michael Bartsch, COO of Porsche North America, who explained that the Panamera is bringing new customers to the brand and helping boost traffic numbers in showrooms.

Porsche expects to sell just 1,000 Panameras this year, with an additional 200 being kept as demonstrators. Next year, the automaker plans to sell between 4,000 and 6,000 Panameras in the U.S., accounting for roughly a quarter of all sales.

Ferrari World Theme Park at Abu Dhabi

Now this is worth taking a vacation for!

Tags: ferrari, abu dhabi, theme park, cool, exotic

Ferrari World Theme Park at Abu Dhabi
These are some of the very first photos of the Ferrari World Abu Dhabi theme park after the completion of the almost alien-like external structure. Set to be the world's largest indoor theme park and the first ever Ferrari theme park in the world when it opens in 2010, it comes complete with a racetrack that will host the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, shops, hotels, various attractions, rides and just about anything else to make it a gear-head's "Disney Land".

Talking about Disney Land, the Ferrari theme park which is located on Yas Island between the coast and city of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, will include the world's fastest rollercoaster. Travelling at speeds in excess of 200 km/h (124 mph), it is said to emulate the feeling of being in a Ferrari F1 car as the passengers go over 62 m through the roof and back down again.

As for the theme park's now completed red roof, which is claimed to have been directly inspired by the classic double curve side profile of the Ferrari GT body, it covers a surface area of 200,000m² (2.15 million square feet) and features the largest "prancing horse" emblem in the world, measuring an astonishing 66 meters (217 feet) in diameter.

Reborn Porsche 928 is fronting up!

AutoExpress takes a look at Porsche's possible future.

Tags: porsche, 928, exotic, european

Reborn Porsche 928 is fronting up!
Get ready for a blast from Porsche’s past! The German firm is developing a luxurious, front-engined grand tourer – a spiritual successor to the 928 built between 1977 and 1995. The ‘new 928’ will be a fifth model line, and is designed to sit above the sportier 911 in the range.

With the compact Boxster and Cayman, the 911, the Cayenne SUV and four-door Panamera, Porsche would appear to have most bases covered. But it’s notable for its absence in the front-engined GT segment. The newcomer will allow the brand to take on rivals such as the Ferrari 599 GTB, Bentley Continental GT and Aston Martin DB9. And our exclusive pictures show exactly why the curvy, Panamera-based coupé is set to stun the competition.

Essentially it’s a two-door, short-wheelbase version of the Panamera, which will help to spread the £1.1billion development costs of that model. Its front-engined layout has a number of inherent benefits, too. More in the jump!

A rear-engined 911 has barely more than 100 litres of luggage space, but a similarly sized GT with its motor up front would offer a useful 320 litres – a vital attribute if the new 928 is to be taken seriously as a grand tourer.

While the nose is virtually identical to the Panamera, the shortened wheelbase and 2+2 layout mean the 928 features far smoother lines at the back. One of the major criticisms levelled at the four-door Panamera was its bloated rear, but this model’s muscular haunches and neater proportions should attract a new wave of style-conscious customers.

As you’d expect from Porsche, though, driver appeal remains a top priority. The engine line-up will mirror that of the Panamera, so a 4.8-litre V8, with or without a turbocharger, producing 500bhp or 400bhp, will be available. The naturally aspirated variant is set to come with four or rear-wheel drive, while the range-topping turbo model will be 4WD only.

Thirsty V8s aren’t the only power units on the agenda. The Cayenne SUV hybrid is ready to go on sale next year, with a petrol-electric version of the Panamera following closely behind. As the new 928 shares the latter’s platform, it’s sure to get the hybrid drivetrain, too.

An Audi S4-sourced 369bhp 3.0-litre supercharged V6, coupled to a 38kW electric motor, will give the hybrid 928 fuel economy that breaks the 30mpg barrier. That will make it the most frugal petrol-powered Porsche ever, while still providing hair-raising performance.

The 928 will slot into Porsche’s pricing line-up somewhere between the 911 and Panamera. The four-door ranges from £70,000-£95,000, while the 911 starts a little lower, at just over £60,000, but stretches to £128,000 for the GT2.

With this is mind, expect the 928 to be pitched between £65,000 and £90,000 – enough to safely undercut its Ferrari and Aston rivals when it goes on sale in 2012.

Lexus LFA to be available in track-spec trim level

Lexus LFA to be available in track-spec trim level
The new 2011 Lexus LFA will be available in a track-tuned trim that will be stripped out and built to track specification.

An insider confirmed that the track-spec Lexus LFA won’t have an upgraded powertrain or engine.

“The LFA is such a bespoke machine that buyers can specify pretty much what they want,” said a company source. “If they choose to ask for it to be stripped out and built with track use in mind, there’s no reason why it won’t be possible.”

Lexus said it has no plans to run the LFA in a race series.

2011 Lexus LFA Officially Revealed

See the supercar Lexus kept a secret until now.

2011 Lexus LFA Officially Revealed
After all the waiting, all the spy shots and all the leaked shots, Lexus has finally taken the wraps of its new exclusive supercar – the 2011 Lexus LFA. However, to Lexus this isn’t just any supercar – it’s a true “clean-sheet” design created by a small team of passionate and dedicated engineers who pushed the boundaries of engineering at every stage.

“The LFA is a thoroughbred supercar, a machine engineered to achieve a single goal – to deliver a supreme driving experience,” said Chief Engineer Haruhiko Tanahashi. “Over the past decade we have pushed every boundary in pursuit of this goal and I believe we have created the most driver-orientated car we possibly could.”

A decade of development? That makes it sound like that this should be the best supercar out there. Of course then you hear the price-tag of $375,000 and wonder if this Japanese supercar is worth purchasing over Italy’s Ferrari or Lamborghini.

Power for the rear-wheel-drive Lexus LFA, which is constructed using advanced carbon fiber technology, comes from a mid-front mounted 4.8L V10 engine that red lines at 9,000 rpm and makes 552-hp with a maximum torque of 354 lb-ft. Mated to a 6-speed Automated Sequential Gearbox, the LFA goes from 0-62 mph in just 3.7 seconds (0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds) with a top speed of 202 mph.

The Lexus LFA coupe will be produced at the Motomachi plant in Toyota City. Toyota will make just 500 examples at rate of 20 units per month “to ensure the finest build quality and attention to detail.” In fact, each V10 engine will be assembled by a single engineer that will bear his signature as a testament. Buyers will be able to choose from a range of extensive options and 30 different exterior paint colors. Lexus says that certain items on the standard equipment list can also be removed, such as the audio system, if you wish to reduce the car’s weight.

For a $375,000 supercar, that’s pretty exclusive.
