Hennessey HPE550 Supercharged Chevy Camaro SS

A video showing it in action.

The 6 pounds of boost heaving into the 6.2-liter LS3 are enough to swell output from the stock 426 horsepower at the crank to a monstrous 562 hp, according to Mr. Hennessey. On the Dynojet chassis dyno at MD Automotive, however, the HPE550 ripped the rollers to the tune of 559 hp at the wheels.

At the test track, the blast from zero to 60 mph took a deliriously brief 4.3 seconds (4.0 seconds with 1 foot of roll out like on a drag strip) and the quarter-mile blurs by in just 12.1 seconds at 120.1 mph. It's an absolutely scalding performance and it's a full four-tenths quicker to 60 than a stock Camaro SS and nearly a full second quicker in the quarter-mile. Most impressively, that 120.1-mph trap speed is 9.2 mph faster than stock. Zounds upon zounds, this thing is rapid.

Camaro SS vs Mustang GT vs Challenger R/T
Car and Driver Magazine has posted up their grudge-match article weighing in on what modern musclecar is worth your coin? To spoil your reading, they think the new Mustang takes first place, Camaro second, and lastly is the Challenger.

Reasons? Find out in the jump!

2009 Dodge Challenger R/T - Comparison Test
Highs: Classic bod, smooth controls, big inside, snick-snick six-speed.
Lows: Corners on custard, too heavy, drab cabin, tires off the church bus.
The Verdict: The most authentic ’60s re-spin of them all.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS - Comparison Test
Highs: Fastest through the trap, grip and zip in the gymkhana, fresh and inventive interior.
Lows: Looks angry, tiny trunk, hard seats, nose-deep-in-a-hole feeling.
The Verdict: A neo-Corvette underneath the Deathmobile from Animal House.

2010 Ford Mustang GT - Comparison Test
Highs: Lighter and tighter in every way, good visibility, fab 1-2-3 turn signals, the king of V-8 roars.
Lows: Only a five-speed, capless fuel filler frequently spills, smallest fuel tank.
The Verdict: Yeah, we’re shocked, too, but this Mustang rocks.

Your thoughts?

2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS still a GO!

The General will still be producing these things.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS still a GO!
General Motors may have scrapped its High Performance Vehicle Operations unit as part of a broader cost-saving program, but it hustled to reassure Inside Line on Thursday that some of the company's crown jewels are "safe."

When asked if the demise of HPVO meant the end of the road for such vehicles as the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS, company spokesman Vince Muniga said: "No. You've got the Camaro SS coming out. It is not threatened at all."

"Camaro SS, Corvette ZR1 and Corvette Z06 are all regularly engineered cars," Muniga explained. "They did not go through HPVO. Most people did not realize that. They are safe."

HPVO created such products as the V-Series Cadillacs, the Chevrolet Cobalt SS and the HHR SS.

"The [Cadillac] CTS-V is a regular part of the CTS lineup, and that will stay for the foreseeable future," Munigan said. "The CTS-V will continue through the life cycle of the product. If they are regular production cars, they will continue through the model run, whether it's an SS Cobalt or an SS HHR." He would not give a timetable for when such vehicles would be eliminated or when the regular production run is scheduled to end.

HPVO was made up of approximately 60 engineers working out of GM's Warren Tech Center. Muniga said none of them have been laid off. Instead, they have been placed "in other areas of the organization."

"We're not going to let those talents go to waste," he said.

But, Muniga emphasized that "all high-performance projects are on indefinite hold."

Previously a no, now becomes a most likely.

Two Blues to get Pushed to Camaro SS
Two colors, Imperial Blue and Aqua Metallic, were originally slated to only be available on RS models of the upcoming Camaro. Not no more! Looks like Cheryl Pilcher (Camaro Production Manager) let the cat out of the bag and hinted that they will both be SS-bound in mid-November. Just a heads up for those who want blue on their next V8 Camaro.
