2010 Shelby GT500 Super Snake Specs
For that small percentage of buyers that aren't satisfied with the 2010 Ford Mustang-based Shelby GT500 that packs a 5.4-liter supercharged V8 with 540 ponies under the hood, Caroll Shelby and his team have prepped an even more hardcore package called Super Snake. Due to go on sale in August, Shelby offers the Super Snake package on the GT500 in two guises, with outputs of 630 and 725 horsepower, the latter offered only on the coupe model.

2010 Shelby GT500 Mustang Super Snake Shelby achieves the power upgrades with a different supercharger kit and a new exhaust system while other mods include a cold air intake system and a custom drive shaft on the 725HP variant

To improve handling, the Super Snake package adds a race-spec suspension system with adjustable dampers, a short throw shifter and a Baer brake system with 6 piston calipers and cross drilled and ventilated discs. Customers can also opt for a more hardcore Eibach handling pack.

2010 Shelby GT500 Mustang Super Snake On the aesthetics side, Shelby adorns the basic GT500 with a unique fiberglass hood with a larger air scoop, specific stripes, numerous carbon fiber body components, sequential tail lights, quarter window scoops and of course, new 20-inch alloy wheels shod in Pirelli P-Zero rubber.

For the interior, the basic Super Snake package adds center gauge cluster, satin door lock knobs and headrests embroidered with the Shelby logo which also appears on the center console.

Once you bring in your GT500, Shelby will charge you $29,495 for 630HP package and $33,495 for the 725HP kit. In both cases, prices including installation but not the donor car - just to make it clear.

RoadandTrack Drives the Shelby Super Snake Stang

RoadandTrack Drives the Shelby Super Snake Stang
Boasting 50 more horses than the limited-run GT500 KR (King of the Road), which launches early next year, the Super Snake allows owners of GT500s (yes, the same car that continues to sell over the dealer sticker of $41,930 more than a year after its release) to claim their own share of road kingdom for an additional $28,000.

The aftermarket changes to take the GT500 to Super Snake status include a long list of Ford Racing parts, as well as proprietary Shelby bits to build a unique-looking, fully warranted alternative to the 600-bhp Dodge Viper, albeit with some extra weight, a back seat and a live rear axle. If you're not averse to risk-taking, you can go with an even more powerful non-Ford-specified blower with no warranty that will push the Super Snake's 5.4-liter V-8 to 725-plus bhp.

The modifications are completed either at Shelby Automobiles' Las Vegas headquarters or the factory-approved modification center at Tasca Ford in Cranston, Rhode Island, and include a new fiberglass hood with functioning scoop, a revamped front fascia with additional brake cooling ducts, carbon-fiber front splitter and rocker panels, a choice of black-riveted C-pillar window closeouts or body-colored side scoops, matte-black striping and larger brakes with front 6-piston calipers developed in conjunction with Baer. The car also benefits from adjustable shocks, stiffer springs, larger-diameter anti-roll bars and a Borla exhaust. Alcoa 20-in. forged alloy wheels are fitted with Pirelli P Zero tires measuring P275/35ZR-20 in the rear and P255/35ZR-20 up front. Inside, there are auxiliary pressure gauges for supercharger boost, fuel and oil mounted atop the instrument panel, the requisite dash plaque with unique serial number and more Shelby and Super Snake emblazoned and embroidered bits than you can shake a stick at.

Of course, that sort of stuff is not without its charm. It is an understatement to say that the Super Snake is a beast. The engine not only makes 605 bhp, but also 590 lb.-ft. of torque (the Shelby-provided dynamometer data put actual at-wheel output at 567 hp and torque at 533 lb.-ft.). That surfeit of motive force easily overwhelms the rear tires. During our acceleration runs, the best we could post was a 0–60-mph time of 4.4 seconds with massive wheelspin in the first two gears. Once underway, though, watch out. The Super Snake bit off the quarter mile in 12.5 sec. at 119.9 mph. By comparison, the stock GT500 ran a 0–60 mph of 4.6 sec. and a quarter-mile time of 12.8 sec.

Ford Mustang GT500 Super Snake in the Flesh
Holy shit, that's intimidating. Finally the Shelby camp has gotten a Shelby GT500 Super Snake prototype out the door for Mustang fans to drool over. It's very menacing to say the least, which definitely makes it deserve the "Super Snake" nameplate.

We can't wait to see what this 600HP supercharged beast is going to do.

Shelby GT500 Super Snake Set to Tear Up Streets

Shelby GT500 Super Snake Set to Tear Up Streets
If the 540 horsepower supercharged GT500KR edition Mustang wasn't enough for you to drool over, be happy to know that an even more venomous snake is in development. Shelby decided that more power was needed, so the Super Snake was born.

Looks-wise, it will resemble the known KR Mustang with the KR hood, hood pins, Shelby stripes, brake ducts, and the 20-inch forged Alcoa rims seen on the KR showcar. Inside, the Super Snake will have new gauges (boost/oil and fuel pressure), custom Shelby sill plates, a Ford Racing short-throw shifter, and a numbered dash plaque.

Under the hood will lie a beefier supercharger that will be making 600 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, standard. Not enough? With optional tuning, Shelby will provide up to 725 horses if you're ready to give up your warranty.

Production for the Super Snake will start at the end of this year. Want to make a clone? Ford Racing and Shelby Automobiles will start stocking parts most likely by June.
