Challenger R/T Widebody Convertible

One of a kind by West Coast Customs

Challenger R/T Widebody Convertible
When it comes to modifying cars and TV Shows, the sky's the limit for what can be done as money isn't usually much of an issue. This one-of-a-kind wide body '09 Dodge Challenger R/T Convertible is the work of the pimp-slapping guys over at West Coast Customs (WCC) and it was built for Joshua 'Chop' Tobin aka, "King of Cars", owner of Las Vegas based car dealership, Towbin Dodge. The Challenger's transformation was featured in the latest episode of WCC's "Street Customs" TV show that aired on TLC on March 26, 2009.

Dodge Challenger R/T Widebody Convertible However, the owner of the one-off Dodge Challenger R/T Convertible wasn't that keen to keep the car in his possession as he put it up for sale on eBay the same day that the show aired on TV... The auction lasted three days with the highest bid being $50,200 and as you may have guessed, the reserve price, which is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for the item, was not met.

Jumbo-sized rear fenders and working power convertible top aside, WCC left their mark on the Challenger R/T with black striping, one-off 24-inch front and 26-inch rear (...) flat black and white Asanti alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli rubber, a new exhaust system, a rear spoiler and blacked out tail lamps.

If GM & Chrysler merge, which cars will survive?

Time for a battle royale!

If GM & Chrysler merge, which cars will survive?
At first we thought the idea of a merger between General Motors and Chrysler LLC was laughable. We still do, but persistent reports to the contrary have us fearing that this marriage just might happen. Combining these two automakers would be a messy job, as many models on both sides of the fence compete directly with on another in the marketplace. If the merger does happen, someone may have to sit down and decide which models stay and which go. We decided to play arm chair auto executive quarterback and hold a Battle Royale. We've pitted model against model in 12 segments in which GM and Chrysler compete directly. In this thought experiment, only one model in each segment will survive to see the New World Order. Get to clickin' below to find out which ones make it.

A Challenger that Dodge will not built

SEMA Preview: 560hp Dodge Challenger Conv
Coach Builders Ltd. is known for its convertible conversions of the Chrysler 300C and Cadillac CTS, so after Dodge made the decision not to offer the Challenger in drop-top guise, it knew what it had to do.

The Florida-based company will bring a customized soft-top Dodge Challenger SRT8 to SEMA, packing a Vortech supercharger good for 560 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. In addition to the hydraulically powered acrylic polyester cloth roof (complete with sound and temperature insulation), the Challenger is dropped courtesy of a KW coil-over suspension over 22-inch Foose wheels coated in Nitto rubber.

The cost of the conversion, which also includes a heated glass rear window, matching headliner and a rear strut bar to shore up the chassis, is a whopping $16,000, making for a $58,000 hair dryer when rolled into the $41,695 base price of an SRT8. We're not saying it's not worth it, but we could think of a few other mods we'd do to the Challenger before hacking the roof off.

Jay Leno's new Challenger SRT-8

Another car to leno's garage

Jay Leno's new Challenger SRT-8
Looks like late night television's most famous car nut is the latest person to fall under the spell of the new Dodge Challenger SRT-8. Autoblog friend Delbert Shoopman says he was walking around the NBC lot in Burbank and happened upon one black Challenger parked directly across from the Tonight Show studio. Further snooping revealed a Jay Leno parking tag on the spot (above). We snooped a bit ourselves and found a blurb on Chrysler's internal blog, Firehouse, where they talk about Jay's latest acquisition.

Seems Jay picked it up yesterday at Valley Dodge in Van Nuys. It will join his 1970 Challenger among the hundreds of other cars in Leno's Garage when he isn't driving it around the Valley or stopping off at local car meets. We'll keep an eye out for him at Bob's Big Boy and VCR to see what he thinks of his latest toy. We're guessing he will get quite a kick out of it, with its 425-hp Hemi V8 and retro-mod good looks. Drive it in good health, Jay.

Challengers on the Road

The 401 Sucks Ass

Challengers on the Road
This past memorial day weekend a friend and I took a road trip to the Toronto area. Not far from the Chrysler plant in Brampton where the 300C, Charger, and new Challenger are made. Traveling down the 401 on the way back to the states we encountered some pretty bad traffic. However we had some nice scenery to look at, we passed up 3 transport trucks loaded with black and orange SRT-8 Challengers. I searched around and did not find much talk about the production models on dealer lots yet, production started May 9th.

This is where I apologize for not having my camera with me, taking very crappy cell phone pictures of the rigs. Then forgetting my cell phone at home because I got into Chicago at 2am this morning and had to show up to work today.

I will try to append some photos to this blog tonight.

Dodge Challenger causes hour delay in traffic
The 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 has been making touring the U.S. auto shows for a few months now, but apparently the new hasn't worn completely off yet. A Challenger SRT8 piloted by Chrysler Canada CEO Reid Bigland caused an hour delay at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel as the border patrol checked out the new ride.

The Chrysler exec was traveling from his Ontario office to his Detroit office when the incident occurred. Apparently the border patrol inspected every inch of the car before letting it pass, causing an hour delay for everyone behind Bigland.

But despite the attention the car received, Bigland didn't garner much attention. "They checked out everything but my ID," Bigland told The Detroit News.

Prototype Challenger Crashes at Road America

Oh man, the boss is gonna be PISSED!

Prototype Challenger Crashes at Road America
A few Chrysler employees have entered a prototype Challenger into this year's "One Lap of America". The car had earned the title "Vanishing Point Challenger" as it is themed after the 1970 Challenger that starred in the 1971 film, "Vanishing Point".

Well, it appears that the true vanishing point is Turn 1 at Road America. That's where the prototype Challenger left the course, and came to rest atop a tire barrier.

The driver was unhurt. The car is reportedly out for the remainder of the season, though it did leave the track under its own power.

Check the images below for a few pictures of what the Vanashing Point Challenger looked like "pre-mangling".

Dodge Challenger presents R/T and SE Models

Dodge Challenger presents R/T and SE Models
For those of you who loved the Challenger SRT8 but would like to spend less than $40k to obtain one, Dodge has unveiled the R/T and SE versions of its new muscle car. The R/T model promises to offer equivalent doses of fun with the 425 6.0L V8 SRT8 as it’s powered by Chrysler’s 5.7-liter Hemi V8 that delivers a hefty 375 Hp and 404 lb.-ft. of torque (548 Nm) when it runs on premium fuel.

Aside from the 5-speed automatic transmission, Dodge also offers a six-speed manual transmission for the R/T - the first for a new-generation HEMI-powered car. According to the American carmaker, the R/T can go from zero to 60 mph in less than six seconds.

As for the entry-level Challenger SE, it is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine matted to a four-speed automatic transmission -yes, 4-speed autos still exist in the States... The V6 unit produces 250 Hp and 250 lb.-ft. of torque (339 Nm). Both versions of the Challenger are set to arrive in Dodge dealerships this fall

Hennessey’s SRT700 Challenger

Tags: domestic, dodge, challenger, turbo, other

Hennessey’s SRT700 Challenger
It didn’t take long for Hennessey to use knowledge gained from years of boosting power from the Viper supercar to increase output of Dodge’s latest performance model. Once again the tuner has turned to turbocharging technology for added oomph, in this case churning out up to 725hp from a stroked and reinforced 7.0L HEMI V8.

Hennessey actually offers three different levels of tune for the new Challenger SRT8. The first two stages, developing 500 and 530hp respectively, rely on a series of breathing mods for the increase in output. The range topping SRT700, meanwhile, gets a custom turbocharging kit, engine stroker upgrade, forged internals, high-flow injectors, a dual 3in exhaust system and ECU mod. The end result is 725hp at 5,200rpm and 1,016Nm (750lb-ft) of torque from 4,000rpm.

Other features include high-flow cylinder heads, stainless steel piping, a 44mm wastegate, front mount intercooler and a 3.5in polished inlet tube blow-off-valve.

Officials claim the car will reach 60mph from rest in just 3.5 seconds, pass the quarter mile in 11.3 seconds at 126mph and go on to reach a top speed of 190mph. Hennessey will also dyno test the car to guarantee the output, and even offers a one year limited warranty in case something goes wrong.

Challenger Super Stock Drag Package

Tags: dodge, challenger, super stock, drag car

Challenger Super Stock Drag Package
We remember seeing the Dodge Challenger Super Stock concept car as shown by Chrysler last year. Rumor has it that a Super Stock package will be available from Dodge directly.

Features of the Super Stock package include: variations of current 5.7L and 6.1L Hemi and 5.9L Magnum V8 engines, lightweight front fascia, lift off hood with functional scoop, lightweight front brakes, lightweight cooling module with electric fan, and accommodations for six-point harnesses. This package will also remove the following street friendly features: windshield wipers, power windows, HVAC system, sound deadening insulation, rear seats, and emissions equipment.

The Super Stock package supposedly removes 800 pounds from a street version Challenger. Stock Elimination drag racing is the intended application.

Challenger Production Interior Pictures
Clearly someone at Chrysler has sprung a leak.
Just a few days ago a few production Challenger exterior pictures sneaked into public view, and now spy shots of the production interior picture have surfaced.

At first glimpse, it looks pretty bland. Parts bin radio anyone? However there isn't a whole lot to go on in these pictures, so final judgment is reserved until I can see it in person when it debuts at the Chicago Auto Show in February.

Supposedly the real production model is supposed to have chrome detail in the instrument panel as well, which is missing in this picture. Time will tell!
