Seems a little harsh for simply speeding...now if they were to cause serious harm to another individual while doing so, I could see those charges being laid successfully.
But for speeding alone? Ridiculous.
Absolutely ridiculous.
"Wut'chu in here for, boy?"
"85 in a 55..."
Come on. 10 years for 30mph over? There are far worse felonies and crimes out there that get LESS time than this.
Now, it states:
"...five to ten years in prison and a ten-year license suspension."
Does that mean 10 years PLUS a 10-year (while you're in prison) license suspension? Because that would be incredibly stupid. However, if they mean 10 years + 10 year license suspension after serving your time, well, that's just over-kill.
Plus seizing your car? If you're in jail or without a license for the next 10 years, what are you going to do with a car you can't drive anyway? Why would they have to take it?
This law was just poorly-thought. They need to really think this one through and consider all aspects. It's hard enough for an ex-con to get a job as it is, but then adding 10 years without a license? Are they going to provide a shuttle service now?
Kind of hard to pay bus fair when you can't get a job.
All because you did 30mph over...
Insane.
It only takes one A.H. to start showing off in front of the police to ruin things for everybody else. On my recent trip down to FL it was very obvious that in my 600 miles of driving that FL possessed the most aggressive drivers of the entire trip so it was only a matter of time. This will probably be just another stupid law on the books that can't be enforced. The main offenders are sport bikes and the police aren't going to chase them.
being a florida bike rider, i would have to say this makes the option to run seem that it could be the better option, not that i would, but think about how severe the consequences are, it may seem better to chance a getway, and if running they at least stand a chance of not getting anything if they get away. This puts even more people at risk, the biker, the car drivers, pedestrians, other bikers. Come on people
Leave it to Florida to screw up another chance to do it right. It goes to show it has nothing to do with saving lives, Its all political.
That is it was directed at motorcyclist only....a wheelie never kills you. Yes you have some idiots that like to drive 90mph and go in and out thru traffic. But that is few of them
and laws won't stop them. Look at Street racing cars, they have been at it for 60 years.
Speed is here to stay, its in the blood.
If Florida wants to save 5000 more lives a year, then they should reinstate the Helmet Law.
Florida should sponsor or organize some Drag Racing events on back roads here and there. Maybe find some nice roads for motorcycling and close them off for an event.
Designate some big parking lots or some thing for stunters etc....
To Fla. Reps Why no Helmet Law? Loose Votes? Thought so, Maybe Florida should be a Mopeds only state.
All a law enforcement officer has to do is "Remember" a tag number and show up at your home and take your property. No due process, no evidence other than a remembered tag number, no visual evidence like an image from a dash board camera, which almost all Police Cruisers have now days.

I had thought Florida might be a nice place to buy a vacation home. No more. Florida is clearly becoming a police state with laws even Soviets would blush about. No, I'll look elsewhere.
