Bankruptcy will probably be better for the big three than taking the bailout. It would allow them to get out from under the UAW contracts and restructure into actual productive (and maybe profitable) companies again.

However, given the UAW's generous campaign contributions, I think they have secured their place in the world for at least another 2 to 4 years and have ensured an auto industry bailout.

normally i would disagree with the bailout but as a chrysler dealership tech i obviously support it.
